Bio
Caitlin Bates is an internationally shown artist currently living and working in Atlanta, GA. She recieved her BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta in 2009. Since graduating, she has been working on seperating herself from the photographic world by adding other mediums into her current work flow. She believes that sometimes limiting one’s artwork to a specific medium constricts an artist from growing while deconstructing the flow of ideas and thought processes.

Artist Statement
I am fascinated by how our bodies function, both physically and mentally, yet still have a hard time understanding simple aspects of life. By viewing our complex structures through a quirky child-like mentality, specifically with my series Growth, Destruction, Rebirth I, I am trying to make and understand those connections between myself and of nature. We both grow physically, but I also believe that, similar to myself, nature can grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We also become dormant in some seasons (or rather, phases of our lives) only to bloom again as we change throughout time. Even though both can show histories and beauty there lies plenty of ruin between them, whether it’s human onto nature, or nature onto human, and everything in between. Whether from selfish desires or means of survival we co-habit the same space in a very similarly beautiful and terrifying process.

I am one of several artists participating in the Chairish The Future gala this March in Atlanta. From the website, “Chairish is a unique gala and auction that challenges talented artists and design firms to create pieces of art from household furniture for sale at the event.”

I picked up a lonely chair from The Furniture Bank of Atlanta, for whom the gala is benefiting, and got straight to work on turning it into a sculptural piece.

What exactly am I doing with it? I have no idea. Yet. I’m working on it. I want it to be along the same lines as the pieces I had up at Beep Beep last month. I have some hands in the making, and I have use an ungodly amount of yarn and plaster. Oh, how my lungs are filled with plaster dust.
