Petra Cortright is an Internet artist who makes videos, gif animations and still-images. Her homepage looks like a dated html page with a bunch of smileys on it and a list of her work: authentic, experimental and nostalgic work with a lot of glitter, sparks, collages and characters making images. Throughout the website there are fun mouse animations, for example sparks that follow your pointer when you move over the screen. Another cool thing is a frame that’s attached to your pointer so you can place the frame on a portrait.

Cortright studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Nowadays she lives and works in California. She has exhibited internationally in galleries such as Gloria Maria Gallery (Milan) and Spencer Brownston (New York) amongst numerous others. Recently Cortright exhibited with her series SO WET at Preteen Gallery in Mexico City.

Petra Cortright é uma artista de Santa Bárbara, Califórnia que recorre ao uso da internet como meio essencial para a sua manifestação artística entre o audio-visual e uma aglomeração surreal de GIFs totalmente bizarras na página principal do seu portefólio online. Petra refere na sua maioria a natureza física da experiência de computação em relação com o ser humano, como por exemplo em “vvebcam”, um dos seus primeiros projetos, a artista se filma a si mesma através da webcam refletindo a atividade de observação de vídeos online. Nele, Petra surge como uma personagem que questiona todo o processo físico de estar sentado em frente ao monitor, tornando-se num consumidor assíduo de YouTube. Esta obra foi removida do YouTube pelo uso extensivo de palavras-chave ‘ofensivas’, mas agora esta arquivada na Rhizome ArtBase, sendo exibida exaustivamente por diversas galerias mundiais e tem sido amplamente discutida em diversos circuitos académicos e críticos.
