ABSTRACT

Convergenze parallele is an audiovisual installation in which airborne dust particles passing through a beam of light are tracked, visualized, and sonified in realtime by a custom software system. The installation reacts to air movements in the exhibition space, allowing the viewer to see and hear the amplifi ed movement of dust particles. “Convergenze parallele” explores the poetic potential of revealing and transforming the imperceptible. The custom software uses a video camera to capture the activity of dust articles passing through the beam of light. It then analyzes the video signal to track the location of individual dust particles, and reveals each particle’s trajectory in the image-processed projection. The physical particles draw traces of their otherwise invisible motion on the digital screen. At random intervals, the software artifi cially saturates the system by briefl y activating the fan-a cloud of dust fi lls the beam of light and creates dense and stunning patterns of particle trajectories and sound. When these unexpected bursts of energy decay, the system returns to a subtle reading of the dust in the exhibition space, and its movement by natural air currents and viewer interaction. The software also sonifi es and spatializes each particle that is tracked and visualized, creating a synchronized audio-visual experience. Real-time spectral processing techniques transform computer-generated white noise based on the presence and movement of the particles. The coordinates for each visual particle are used to spatialize their sound particle counterparts within an ambisonic surround system around the installation. This spatial mapping adds an additional kinetic quality to the audio-visual experience, animating the surrounding space and immersing the observer in gestural currents of movement. “Convergenze Parallele” attempts to sensitize observers to the intangible energies and perpetual transformations of natural phenomena. Ernesto Klar (U.S./Venezuela) is a new media artist based in New York City. His artistic work explores the poetic potential of revealing and transforming the threshold between the perceptible and the imperceptible. Klar’s works have been exhibited at festivals, galleries, and fairs such as Eyebeam, Pulse Art Fair, Issue Project Room, and Chelsea Art Museum in New York City, the ICA in Boston, the CCCB in Barcelona (Spain), the FILE Festival in Sao Paulo, the Oi Futuro Museum in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the Centrum Kunstlicht in de Kunst in Eindhoven (Netherlands), and The Share Festival in Turin (Italy), among others. His awards include the first prize of the File Prix Lux in the Interactive Arts category (2010), the Artist Fellowship in Computer Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts (2007), an Individual Artist Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (2009), as well as grants and fellowships from the Greenwall Foundation (2009), and the Experimental Television Center (2010), among others. Klar holds an MFA from Parsons The New School for Design, and a BMD from Berklee College of Music. Since 2005, he has been a faculty member at Parsons The New School for Design and The New School for Film and Media Studies in New York City.

ABSTRACT

Convergências Paralelas é uma instalação audiovisual em que partículas de poeira que passam por um feixe de luz são rastreadas, visualizadas e sonorizadas em tempo real por um sistema de software. A instalação reage aos movimentos do ar no espaço de exposição, permitindo que o espectador veja e escute o movimento amplifi cado das partículas de poeira. A obra explora o potencial poético de revelar e transformar o imperceptível. O software customizado usa uma câmera de vídeo para captar a atividade das partículas de poeira e analisa o sinal de vídeo para localizar partículas individuais, revelando a trajetória de cada uma na projeção da imagem processada. As partículas físicas desenham traços de seu movimento na tela digital. A intervalos aleatórios, o software artifi cialmente satura o sistema ao ativar rapidamente um ventilador – uma nuvem de poeira enche o feixe de luz e cria padrões densos e surpreendentes de trajetórias e sons. Quando esses surtos de energia imprevistos diminuem, o sistema volta a uma leitura sutil da poeira no espaço e seu movimento provocado por correntes de ar e a interação dos espectadores. O software também sonoriza e espacializa cada partícula que é rastreada e visualizada, criando uma experiência audiovisual sincronizada. Técnicas de processamento espectral em tempo real transformam o ruído branco gerado por computador com base na presença e movimento das partículas. As coordenadas de cada partícula visual são usadas para espacializar suas contrapartidas sonoras num sistema surround ambissônico ao redor da instalação. Esse mapeamento espacial dá uma qualidade cinética adicional à experiência audiovisual, animando o espaço circundante e imergindo o observador em correntes gestuais de movimento. “Convergenze Parallele” pretende sensibilizar os observadores para as energias intangíveis e as perpétuas transformações dos fenômenos naturais.
