The wonderful world of abstraction
“I’m afraid we lost our minister”, said with a tone of embarrassment one of the honoured VIP guests of an exhibition opening where Jacob Dahlgren’s “Wonderful World of Abstraction” was on display. After slowly grasping the real meaning of the polite comment the imposing body guards dashed themselves into the shiny cube of silk ribbons and were immediately out of sight, lost in it. All the participants of this rather comic scene were mesmerized by the invitingly tactile promise of the installation by Dahlgren, but were also unaware of its hidden trap.
Dahlgren builds his playful, wonderful world from objects and materials known from everyday life. His objects and installations come into being out of a lament over the quality, variability and amount of the utilised materials, and, in places, lead from the banalistic, through an approach of playfulness and inventiveness, into the sublime. The wonderful world of abstraction, which consist of gigantic, colorful, space-forming, abstract constructions made out of 32,000 pieces of silk thread.
This gargantuan, glistening cube beckons to the spectator to enter – with promises of playful moments, but not without the risk of losing control, of getting lost in the piece and enduring claustrophobic reactions.
Dahlgren’s works take into account the attributes of the given exhibition space, and assume a direct, fertile relationship with the constructed space in which they appear. Their references are all taken from the great isms of classic modern art; past the genealogy of abstract painting, his oeuvre is replete with quotations from constructivist art, from the strategies of minimal, pop and op art.

Efter att ha upplevt ett antal av Jacob Dahlgrens installationer är det nästan omöjligt att inte se spår av dem i vardagslivet. Dahlgren använder redan existerande, massproducerade föremål i sitt arbete, till exempel yoghurtförpackningar, kaffemuggar i plast, randiga t-tröjor och till och med piltavlor. Det typiskt Dahlgrenska sättet att ordna stora mängder föremål leder tanken till ett modernistiskt och abstrakt måleri som vecklats ut i rummet. Många av hans verk har tillkommit i ett slags dialog med den senmodernistiske svenske konstnären Olle Baertling, som ägnade sitt liv åt de diagonala och triangulära färgfält han skapade vad han än företog sig: målningar, offentliga uppdrag, skulpturer.
Vi kan hitta de strikt formalistiska mönstren och konstruktionerna överallt i vår omgivning: i arkitekturen; i en stor del av formgivningen; i det offentliga rum som omger oss, ofta starkt förknippat med utopiska, modernistiska och positivistiska framtidsplaner med demokrati och jämlikhet som högsta mål. Genom att i sina installationer beröva vardagsföremålen deras funktionalitet och i stället betona de estetiska aspekterna, med andra ord omvandla dem till konst, stöper han om dessa “gamla” idéer och begrepp till något helt och hållet samtida.

I, the world, things, life removes the hand of the artist, and instead functions more as a series of instructions. The wall of the gallery is measured and dartboards are purchased to fill the space; the optical illusion begins. Accompanying darts are placed in boxes on the floor and thus the audience is invited to engage with the work. Scoring a bullseye should be easy with so many chances, but the more you try to focus, the more the targets move. The darts are thrown until the boxes are empty, then they are retrieved and placed once again from whence they came, and the canvas is blank once again; the process continues.

Jacob Dahlgren is a Swedish painter, sculptor, and conceptual artist who works to a large extent with unconventional materials. The artist finds abstraction in everyday objects, which he employs to create dynamic interactive installations and performances. When arranged, the individual objects lose their intended function, their original value, and become part of something completely new. Along with experimenting with such artistic styles of the twentieth century as Constructivism, Minimal Art, and Pop Art, Dahlgren also quotes from the Op Art movement. A common theme for all the works is how art and our everyday life are intertwined.
Dahlgren represented Sweden in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007, and has since exhibited worldwide at venues such as the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and participated in exhibitions such as “Superabundant” at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, UK, “Stitched and Gathered at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center of Moma in New York and “Dangerous Beauty” at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. Image and After, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland. Dahlgren has been candidate for the Ars Fennica Prize.
Jacob Dahlgren has worn a striped T-shirt every day for the last eight years and intends to do so for the rest of his life. Every T-shirt is documented as a painting. Dahlgren looks upon himself as a walking, living exhibition in his striped T-shirts and he also considers the world to be an art show. Shows how our every day life can be viewed as an exhibition of geometric abstract patterns.
From “Art to Life to Art”, is closely linked to its title. It is made out of tins of food that Jacob has eaten. The whole sculpture has been travelling through his body before becoming a geometrical sculpture. This work can be viewed as a modernist abstraction but also as an interactive process, relating to some of his earlier works such as “I, the world, things, life” in the Nordic Pavilion in Venice.
Jacob Dahlgren has made several public works of art in Sweden, and his works are in public and private collections both in Sweden and outside the country.
With each of his works Dahlgren proves to us that everyday life contains material for art. He processes the everyday experience, reminding us that it is worth our while to look around us. In a sense, he still carries on the tradition of constructivism, reforming and refreshing it, and placing it in the present-day context.

Réconciliant pop art et minimalisme, Jacob Dahlgren détourne les objets de la vie quotidienne tels que des cintres, des tasses de café, des boîtes de conserve,… pour en faire des installations géométriques abstraites. Il joue sur l’impact de la couleur et leur force d’attraction pour capter l’attention du spectateur, depuis la sélection jusqu’à l’ordonnancement de ces objets. Par la fusion du quotidien et de l’art moderne et en n’hésitant pas à solliciter le spectateur, l’artiste suédois parvient à critiquer la société de consommation qui nous entoure, en toute simplicité.
Dans Heaven is a place on Earth, Jacob Dahlgren poursuit les réflexions des minimalistes autour du rapport corps/objet. À travers l’emploi d’un produit manufacturé IKEA, c’est-à-dire dépourvu de toute sacralisation artistique, l’artiste fait clairement appel à la participation du spectateur en l’invitant à monter sur l’installation de pèse-personnes ; spectateur et objet ne faisant plus qu’un. L’œuvre est une méditation non dénuée d’ironie sur la masse en tant que poids, en tant que société obsédée par cette masse mais aussi sur le volume et la disparition.

“Jacob Dahlgren wurde 1970 in Stockholm geboren. Seine Arbeiten wurden bei zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen wie der Venedig Biennale 2007, in der Kunsthalle Malmö, sowie bei der Art Basel und der Armory Show New York gezeigt.
In seinem konzeptionellen Werk versetzt er den Betrachter in einen Kosmos prägnanter Farben, in dem die Grenze zwischen Alltagsgegenstand und Kunst zerfließt. Kleiderbügel, Joghurtbecher, Seidenbänder oder Dartscheiben werden durch Dahlgren zu Kunstwerken geformt, in denen der Umgang mit Sehkonventionen in den Vordergrund rückt. Dahlgren, der seit vielen Jahren täglich ein gestreiftes Hemd trägt, hat Streifenkombinationen zu einem seiner zentralen Markenzeichen gemacht.
Marcel Bühler wurde 1969 in Mühlheim an der Ruhr geboren. Er ist Stipendiat der Villa Aurora, Los Angeles/ Berlin und des Else-Heiliger-Fonds. Seine Arbeiten sind in verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Sammlungen, wie der Montblanc Collection, vertreten.
In seinen Lichtarbeiten, Skulpturen, Installationen und Collagen beschäftigt sich Marcel Bühler mit der Kunst als exemplarisches soziales System, insbesondere mit dessen Reaktionen auf Brüche, wie: Ausgrenzung, Disziplinierung, Veränderung und Anpassung.
Bei dieser Gruppenausstellung handelt es sich um die erste gemeinsame Ausstellung der beiden Künstler. Sowohl die Auswahl des Titels, als auch die zu präsentierenden Arbeiten, erfolgten in enger Zusammenarbeit.”
