heralded as one of the most influential artists of his generation, olafur eliasson unveils his first permanent public artwork on the west coast of the united states. located at the golden state warriors and chase centre in san francisco, seeing spheres, 2019, consists of five fifteen-and-a-half-feet-tall polished hydro-formed steel spheres that stand in a circle around a central space.

‘seeing spheres is a public space that contains you and contains multitudes,’ comments eliasson. ‘we often think of public space as empty, negative space in the city, viewed from a car or crossed on the way to somewhere else. seeing spheres offers a place to pause, where you see yourself from the outside, as a participant in society.’

each of olafur eliasson’s seeing spheres supports a flat, circular mirrored face, framed by a ring of LED lights, which is oriented inward to reflect the mirrored faces of the surrounding spheres. together they produce a surprising environment of multilayered, reflected spaces in which the same people and settings appear again and again, visible from various unexpected angles. tunnel-like sets of nested reflections open up in the mirrors, repeating countless times and disappearing into the distance.

the artist frequently uses mirrors to expand spaces and create a subtle and playful sense of spatial confusion that stimulates awareness of our bodies and perception. seeing spheres enables viewers to see themselves from the outside, as co-participants in the shared world that appears within the layers of virtual space conjured by the cluster of giant mirrors. the artwork heightens visitors’ awareness of themselves and their surroundings, exemplifying art’s potential to, in eliasson’s words, ‘rain our capacities for perceiving and interpreting the world.’

situated on chase center’s 25,000 square foot triangular plaza in front of the east entrance to the arena, this striking new artwork establishes a prominent public setting in the city for visitors to meet and interact.

El artista danés Olafur Eliasson acaba de inaugurar su obra pública más grande en Estados Unidos y su primer trabajo permanente en la costa oeste del país. Seeing Spheres está ubicado frente al complejo deportivo Chase Center de San Francisco y consta de cinco esferas de acero pulido hidroformado que poseen 4,8 metros de diámetro. Las piezas están dispuestas de tal manera que encierran un cuadrado de concreto frente a la entrada del edificio, invitado a los transeúntes a detenerse y a observar tanto el reflejo propio como el del entorno. Cada orbe posee además un espejo circular rodeado de LED que permite a las personas mirar el centro; así, cuando las luces se encienden reflejan las caras internas y crean la apariencia de un túnel. El Chase Center es el hogar del equipo de básquetbol Golden State Warriors y además de esta instalación de Eliasson albergará obras de decenas de artistas y diseñadores entre los que se cuenta Alexander Calder e Isamu Noguchi.

L’ARTISTA DANESE HA REALIZZATO PER IL CHASE CENTER DI SAN FRANCISCO UNA GRANDE INSTALLAZIONE DI SFERE IN ACCIAIO CHE RIFLETTONO LO SPAZIO DELLA GRANDE PIAZZA DI THRIVE CITY, NEL QUARTIERE DI MISSION BAY

Di Chase Center abbiamo parlato lo scorso giugno: inaugurato pochi giorni fa con un concerto dei Metallica e della San Francisco Symphony, è un’arena sportiva e di intrattenimento con 18.064 posti che fa parte del più ambizioso progetto urbanistico di Thrive City, complesso polifunzionale finanziato privatamente che si trova nel quartiere Mission Bay di San Francisco. Con 13mila metri quadrati di piazze e spazi aperti pubblicamente accessibili, l’area comprende inoltre edifici per uffici, ristoranti e negozi, diventando così un luogo di aggregazione per la comunità votato al benessere: saranno offerti infatti programmi di salute, sessioni di yoga e pattinaggio sul ghiaccio, e saranno presenti anche mercati contadini. Punto focale di Thrive City è quindi Chase Center, che oltre alle partite dei Golden State Warriors – team di Oakland che milita nell’NBA, il campionato di basket professionistico degli Stati Uniti – ospita concerti, eventi culturali, spettacoli per famiglie, per un totale di quasi 200 eventi all’anno. A Thrive City inoltre non mancano gli interventi di arte contemporanea, a partire da Seeing spheres, opera che Olafur Eliasson (Copenaghen, 1967) ha realizzato appositamente per il distretto.

SEEING SPHERES DI OLAFUR ELIASSON PER IL CHASE CENTER A SAN FRANCISCO
Seeing spheres è costituita da cinque sfere di acciaio idroformato lucido alte oltre 4 metri e mezzo disposte a cerchio, di fronte all’ingresso est del Chase Center. Ogni sfera supporta una faccia speculare circolare, incorniciata da un anello di luci a LED, orientata verso l’interno per riflettere le facce delle sfere circostanti. Le sfere e le loro facce speculari riproducono così un ambiente costituito da spazi “multistrato”, in cui le persone e tutto ciò che su di loro si riflette sembrano moltiplicarsi all’infinito. “Seeing spheres è uno spazio pubblico che ti contiene e contiene moltitudini”, spiega Eliasson. “Spesso pensiamo allo spazio pubblico come a uno spazio vuoto e negativo in città, visto da un’auto o attraversato per strada per andare altrove. Seeing spheres offre un posto dove fermarsi, in cui vederti dall’esterno, partecipe della società”. Quelli della percezione e degli spazi pubblici sono temi ricorrenti nella poetica di Eliasson, che proprio al Museum of Modern Art di San Francisco, nel 2007, ha presentato la sua prima retrospettiva statunitense. Attualmente alla Tate Modern di Londra è in corso Olafur Eliasson: In Real Life, la più ampia monografica mai organizzata sull’artista danese che racconta trent’anni della sua carriera.

CHASE CENTER E L’ARTE CONTEMPORANEA
Quello di Olafur Eliasson non è il primo esempio del ruolo che l’arte contemporanea riveste a Thrive City e in particolare al Chase Center. Un paio di mesi fa lo SFMOMA – San Francisco Museum of Modern Art e i Golden State Warriors hanno stretto una particolare collaborazione: lo SFMOMA ha in prestito ai Warriors opere della propria collezione, per essere esposte al Chase Center. Tra le prime opere in prestito spiccano Untitled di Alexander Calder e Play Sculpture di Isamu Noguchi.
