Romance & The Landscape by Justin Hodges disrupts the banality of the day-to-day by re-contextualizing images and objects and highlighting the intricacy of our relationship to our planet. According to the artist, the natural world is a container of sorts for many things, both human and otherwise. With that, he encourages us to think about the routines and convenience of our interactions.

State of Gathering
Kishio Suga is a leading figure of the Mono-ha movement—Japanese for “the school of things”— known for their radical use of elemental materials. He studied oil painting, but is best known for his multi-media sculptures, installations, and spatial interventions. Suga describes his process as one of “re-conceptualization” and of discovering the “unfamiliar phrasing” of what appears familiar in day-to-day life.

Galactic Everyday

The subject of humanness and achieving human comfort in space has been overlooked by science. Humanizing space needs to be addressed and given attention and research in order for humans to live well in long-term space colonization and deep space exploration. My position on space travel is neither the picture painted by NASA and SPACEX, nor is it the adventures of Barbarella, it is the grey area of space, the overlooked day-to-day life of humanity that I believe to be of importance. Why can’t living in space be purposeful and fulfilling but also enjoyable, pleasurable, and sensuous?

Soft Spin
Soft Spin is a public art project which also featured a performance intervention, in the style of “flash mobs”. Colour, texture, movement, and decidedly flirtatious forms invite visitors to look up and embrace the unexpected, highlighting the ever-present potential for encounters with unforeseen pleasure and drama in the day-to-day. From the possibility of feeling miniaturized by the enormity of the installation’s curvaceous hemlines to the play of sunlight through the bursts of spring-time colour, Soft Spin steps away from legers, straight lines, and the black and white. The clean, engineered certainty of corporate grandeur is infused with an immersive dose of the whimsical, the feminine, and the celebratory.

Haze and Fog

Cao Fei’s ‘Haze and Fog’ is a new type of zombie movie set in modern China made by one of the most important Chinese artists working today. Working with film, photography, installation and performance Cao Fei probes her personal and cultural relationship to metropolitan China.Rather than positioning activity as good vs evil, Cao Fei’s major new video commission explores how the collective consciousness of people living in the time of what the artist calls “magical metropolises” emerges from seemingly tedious, mundane, day-to-day life. This magic reality is created through a struggle at the tipping point between the visible and the invisible.
