Nicolas Sassoon and Rick Silva

Signals
SIGNALS is a collaborative project by artists Nicolas Sassoon and Rick Silva that focuses on immersive audio-visual renderings of altered seascapes. Sassoon and Silva share an ongoing theme in their individual practices; the depiction of wilderness and natural forms through computer imaging. Created by merging their respective fields of visual research, SIGNALS features oceanic panoramas inhabited by unnatural substances and enigmatic structures. The project draws from sources such as oceanographic surveys, climate studies and science-fiction to create 3D generated video works and installations that reflect on contamination, mutation and future ecologies.

PAUL CHAN

ODYSSEUS AND THE BATHERS

Far from the traditional pastoral scenes that are evoked by the exhibition’s title, the New York-based artist has conjured a bright and minimalist series of kinetic sculptures at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. For the new works, the artist drew inspiration from Ancient Greece. This was not only through the titles of his work, which play on the names of characters from The Odyssey, but also through an exploration of the characteristics of the protagonists.Abstract and enigmatic, Paul Chan artfully brings the philosophical tethering of Ancient Greek thought to a modern and relatable new setting. Odysseus’ drive to return to his home after the Trojan War, and the way in which he navigates the journey, becomes a poignant metaphor for contemporary experience.

Sanja Marusic

Dutch-Croatian photographer Sanja Marušić uses an experimental approach to colour, composition, materials, and manipulations in her work to create dreamlike scenes that are at once cinematic and alienating. She travels the world in her production of these otherworldly images, finding settings and forms that play with our relation to the subconscious, simplifying the bodies of her subjects with geometric shapes, and abstracting the human form even further by incorporating stylised dance movements.Putting places above people, many of Sanja’s photographs are set in wide open futuristic spaces in an attempt to create surreal and alienating visual emotions. She often uses cool and bright colours as well as singular objects and accessories in order to create unique and enigmatic narratives.

DOROTHEE GOLZ

Дороти Гольц

HILARY FAYE

Хилари Фэй
Faye has a magical eye for composition and colour, which especially shines through in her photography. Her collages meld objects, people, animals and landscapes together with haphazard cropping and appropriation, and the outcomes are compelling and enigmatic. She dabbles in layering and geometry; her chosen textures and tones are evocative of another era, with use of nostalgic film grains, which is at the forefront of her mixed media mantra. She has a knack of combining a myriad of elements and arranging them into a rich formation of imagery.

Willy Verginer

ВИЛЛИ ВЕРДЖНЕРА
意大利雕塑家
ciuria de foies

These lifelike sculptures are typically carved from solid linden wood then painted with acrylic paint. Their subtle but strange gestures coupled with unexpected objects give the sculptures a quietly surreal atmosphere. Verginer’s peculiar style of painting his work adds to each piece’s enigmatic quality. Rather than realistically paint each individual detail, Verginer applies large swaths of color to his sculptures. The pieces nearly seem to be dipped in pools of pigment. These large fields of color work in contrasting against the realism of each sculpture.

Matt Keegan

Without touch, we can’t connect. Without skin, we can’t touch.
Matt Keegan is a conceptual artist known for his enigmatic combinations of design, photography, text, printmaking, and sculpture. Using stenciling and printmaking techniques, Keegan isolates idiomatic phrases—for instance, “it goes without saying” or “picture perfect”—and transforms them into art objects, calling attention to the materiality of language and its open-ended possibilities.

MARCEL BROODTHAERS

pyramide de toiles

During his twelve-year career as a visual artist, Marcel Broodthaers produced an astonishing variety of works in a wide range of media, including enigmatic objects made of egg – and mussel shells, elegant typographic paintings, films, pints, photographs, and ephemeral, provocative installations. Heir to fellow Belgian René Magritte, his works have also been linked to Pop Art, Conceptualism, Dada, and Minimalism. While extremely rich in allusion, Broodthaers’ s work is ultimately enigmatic and his meaning elusive. In effect, rather than providing answers, Broodthaers’s work raises questions, often about the very nature of art and the institutions that protect and foster it.
