Alter-Projects and Servaire & Co have partnered to design Metronome, an oscillating installation at the London Design Biennale created to trigger memories through sounds and smells. The installation is a room with a scent-diffusing physical metronome at its centre accompanied by an ASMR soundscape by designer Steve Lastro.

“This work-in-progress piece is about reverse oscilloscope synthesizer. When I used the ilda laser protocol to manipulate the laser graphic, I found it turned the vector graphic to stereo audio first , then the laser point started drawing by X and Y axis coordinates. So I reverse the system and made a live-control set to make 3d model data into sound.” Yeh Ting Hao

Swing Time

SWING TIME est un espace de jeux interactif composé de 20 balançoires en forme d’anneau lumineux. L’installation active un parc temporaire entre le Boston Convention and Exhibition Center et D Street pour créer un espace public expérimental. Fabrication sur mesure à partir de polypropylène soudé, les balançoires sont conçus en trois tailles différentes de sorte que les spectateurs peuvent participer, le but de l’exercice, est de jouer avec SWING TIME à titre individuel ou en groupe.L’éclairage LED au sein de la balançoire est contrôlé par un micro-contrôleur personnalisé, signalisant le niveau d’activité de la balançoire. Un accéléromètre interne mesure les forces d’accélération de l’oscillation. Lorsque les forces sont statiques et les fluctuations ne sont pas utilisés, ils émettent une lumière douce, blanche qui éclaire la zone. Lorsque les balançoires sont en mouvement, le micro-contrôleur allume la lumière du blanc au violet, en créant un effet lumineux coloré.


“Oscillations” präsentiert eine Gruppe von Statuen aus Bronze, Alabaster, Marmor und Stein, die in einer großen und eindringlichen Installation platziert sind. Die Statuen stellen alte, prähistorische Venus-Statuen dar, die einer Ära vor 15’000 Jahren Ausdruck verleihen, als Frauen zum ersten Mal die Kraft psychoaktiver Substanzen und die Reisen des Geistes erforschten. Humeau navigiert mit diesen Venus zwischen den Welten, während sie Statuen sprechen: Ihre Stimme schafft einen Oszillationsraum zwischen der menschlichen Welt und der Geisterwelt und nimmt die Besucher in diese Art von schamanistischem Ritual mit.


Die Power Pixels-Ausstellung besteht aus zwei generativen und interaktiven Virtual-Reality-Installationen: Complex Meshes 2020 und Oscillations 2020, eine Arbeit, die erstmals der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wird. Oscillations 2020 ermöglicht eine grafische 3D-Visualisierung der Musik von Michel Redolfi. Eine Wellenform wird in Echtzeit entsprechend den Frequenzen und Amplituden der Musik erzeugt. Diese Klangspektren der verschiedenen Musikklänge erzeugen endlose imaginäre Landschaften. Bild und Musik reagieren in einer Verschmelzung emotionaler Natur aufeinander, die zu einer echten Synästhesie beiträgt.

Waldian is a standalone, wall hanging sound and light fixture capable of playing a near infinite amount of melodic permutations over a predetermined musical scale, complemented by emerging light patterns from twelve separate LEDs spread across the sculpture. In technical terms, Waldian contains two oscillators, an envelope generator and a voltage controlled amplifier, all controlled by impulses from a network of logic gates akin to those of early computers. These impulses are essentially the nerves in the electronic ecosystem, deciding over pitch and amplitude changes as well as creating bursts of light to highlight the entrances of each note. Finally, there is a tube overdrive stage that creates harmonic and subharmonics based on how far away the two oscillators are from each other in frequency. Most parameters are customizable, such as the aforementioned pitch, amplitude and overdrive, but the responsiveness and envelope of the light bursts can also be adjusted, directly affecting the appearance of the light patterns.

Five screens were installed by the artist as pendulums that swing continuously. As soon as all five have come to a standstill, they are pulled back into their original positions with the help of cable winches and are made to swing again – triggered by pulling a rip cord, a performative act that cannot take place without human intervention and which involves the exhibition supervisor in the installation. Each cycle, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, ends as soon as all five screens have come to a standstill and no more sound is produced by their movement. The sound is produced by the amplification of the friction to which the joints of the moving pendulum are subjected. Multiplication thus creates five oscillating loops that merge into one another with a time offset.

“Oscillations” presents a group of statues made of bronze, alabaster, marble and stone, placed in a large and immersive installation. The statues represent ancient, prehistoric Venus statues, which give voice to an era 15’000 years ago, when women explored for the first time the power of psychoactive substances and the journeys of the mind. Humeau navigates between worlds with these Venuses as they are speaking statues: their voice create a space of oscillation between the human world and spirits world, taking the visitors with them in this sort of shamanistic ritual.

Omni-Vermille is based on computer-generated real-time 3D images. The programmed code allows light spots to oscillate against a dark background. The colors sometimes move dynamically, sometimes calmly across the projection surface; sometimes they evoke plasticity, sometimes depth. This continuous metamorphosis endows the contents of the images with a sensual, even lively quality. The metamorphosis designed by algorithms opens up a new time-based morphology of colors and forms for painting. The play of colors is accompanied by a stereophonic sound composition by Jean-Jacques Birgé (*1952, France). The sounds follow the shapes of the colors, only to stand out again the next moment: the combination of sound and image results entirely from the laws of random simultaneity.

Phonotube are experimental instruments for live audio visual performance, constructed as Luminous instruments and sound sequencers, that use fluorescent lamp tubes and LED strips, as light sources. The tubes are covered with negative ofsset, printed with sound patterns that spin at variable speed. The oscillation from the light emitted by these patterns is transduced to sound, processed by light excitation, a variety of electronic circuits as pre-amps with photo-cells and phototransitors, voltage control oscillators, relays, Filters, 1bit attiny85 micro controler. The technological principle is based on the photophone, patented by Graham Bell and inspired by audio visuals experimenters as Norman Mclaren,that used the optical sound technology of Film. In the history of the invention of electronic sound instruments, the study of light and its behavior as a particle or wave, and its application to sound processes, had a relevant position and is currently, one of the areas of scientific research with the greatest potential in human communication.


Simple Harmonic Motion study #5d

Behind the different incarnations, at the heart of the project lies the concept of creating complexity from simplicity. Through the use of custom software, a number of ‘agents’ are created and assigned a simple behavior. Each follow an extremely simple repetitive pattern of movement and sound. On their own, each agent is relatively monotonous, basic and mechanical. The repetition duration, motion and sound of each agent is precisely tuned such that the collection of all agents moving together, creates a unique, evolving and complex composition – both visually and sonically.The seed of inspiration comes from the motion of pendulums and other fundamental oscillatory phenomena which exhibit simple harmonic motion. The project extracts and amplifies these complex patterns, both through visual abstraction and emphasis; and also through sonifying the phenomena and creating musical patterns driven by the same equations that dictate the behaviour.
