Alter-Projects and Servaire & Co

Metronome
Alter-Projects and Servaire & Co have partnered to design Metronome, an oscillating installation at the London Design Biennale created to trigger memories through sounds and smells. The installation is a room with a scent-diffusing physical metronome at its centre accompanied by an ASMR soundscape by designer Steve Lastro.

Synesthesia Machine
“Synesthesia Machine” is an artificial intelligence with synesthesia, it will emitting corresponding unique scents while perceiving human facial expressions. Through the facial expression recognition algorithm, it can analyze the facial expressions of the audience and output the values of different emotions. At the same time, based on these emotional values, the installation is driven to extract different proportions of scent liquid and atomized and mixed to convert the audience’s facial expression into a unique smell.

Labor
What does labor smell like? Labor is a dynamic, self-regulating art installation that re-creates the scent of people exerting themselves under stressful conditions. There are, however, no people involved in making the smell – it is created by bacteria propagating in the three glass bioreactors. Each bioreactor incubates a unique species of human skin bacteria responsible for the primary scent of sweating bodies: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium xerosis and Propionibacterium avidum. As these bacteria metabolize simple sugars and fats, they create the distinct smells associated with human exertion, stress and anxiety. Their scents combine in the central chamber with which a sweatshop icon, the white t-shirt, is infused as the scents are disseminated. The scent intensifies throughout the exhibition.

Where Dogs Run

Smell of faces
This unique, ever-changing pattern is visualized in a facial composite. This is how it works: when a person approaches the analyzer, sniffing tubes “sniff him, then gas analyzers process the information, which then passes to a computer program that translate air composition data into data concerning the shape and position of facial features (the components of a facial composite). As a result, a person sees a face of their smell that is conditional, in no way related to their actual physical appearance.

ADI MAROM

Interactive Telecommunications Program
Designs by Adi Marom and Hans Hemmert explore how daily functions and especially face-to-face communication can change simply by tweaking and tinkering with people’s height. Marom’s robotic footwear extends and contracts via an iPhone application, so that the wearer becomes taller or shorter to fit various needs and moods— from reaching a higher supermarket shelf to smelling a flower on a tree branch; height thus becomes what the designer calls an “interactive variable.”

KATE COOPER

Rigged
A hybrid of consumer associations, ranging from the glossy iconography of the TV commercial and the sterility of video game graphics to the luminosity of the department store poster and the smell of freshly opened cosmetics, create a subconscious lure. Her use of CGI technology in her artistic practice surpasses a simple study of digital textures (think nostalgic glitch-making) to occupy a full-fleshed, hyperreal space, usually reserved to corporate giants in advertising or entertainment.

OMER POLAK

Self portrait with white odor
I started the project as a personal research in odor. At the beginning I tried to experience the world through smells and without them, tried to learn my own smell through designated mask. I “Recorded” Smells in primitive ways and spread them artificially. Then I tried to neutralize my sense of smell by using blurring “White odor” as if I was an anosmic for one day. I created conceptual models for an instrument that would “increase odor”, and for an instrument that will allow you to smell danger/diseases

OSNI
‘the goal of the project is to present the fragrances of maison cartier to the public beyond any commercial or advertising context, in order to show that smell is an unrivaled vector of emotions‘, explains lead perfumer mathilde laurent. ‘[scent] is a source of wonderment, of questioning and surprise. an incredible sensation- making machine!’ OSNI symbolizes the hybridization of two distant worlds: olfaction and climate technology. a great amount of research and experiments ensured that the ‘perfuming’ of the cloud was possible, held in balance between two strata of air in an artful and elegant installation[…]

Anthropodino
Ernesto Neto’s interactive installation anthropodino, currently on display at the Park Avenue Armory, is a massive sensual playground that invites viewers to touch the various fabrics, lie down on a large purple beanbag, walk through the womb-like structure, and smell the aromatic fabric tubes dangling from above.

PETER DE CUPERE

Tree Virus
“Tree Virus” sculpture wasn’t much to look at: a dead, black tree rooted in a craggy white ball suspended over a dirt pit, all of it covered by a plastic igloo. Built on a college campus in the Netherlands in 2008, the whole thing might have been leftover scenery from a Tim Burton film if it weren’t for the outrageous smell.
Inside the igloo, a heady mix of peppermint and black pepper saturated the air. It flooded the nose and stung the eyes. Most visitors cried; many ran away. Others seemed to enjoy it, laughing through the tears.

blind smell stick

Explore the smells of your city, environment or another location by simply walking by and sniffing with the Blind Smell Stick. The little bulb on top of the stick has holes in it and it detects the smells. With the use of a few mini ventilators, heating, and filters, the scents reach your nose through a special tube. You can wear dark sunglasses and really focus on the smells or you can also open the dark glasses and take a look at what you’re smelling. It’s another way to explore a city or the surroundings. The Blind Smell Stick lets you re-design the way you experience your life.
It’s also a tool to help blind people to find their way and to help them enjoy their daily life more.It has a lot of possibilities. We could make a smell line (Smell Groove) through the city and every street would have their own smell. That makes it easier on people to find their way and also makes it more pleasurable.
