A.LTER S.ESSIO

LOSS-LAYERS

source: pan-etcnet

Comment continuer ?

Three elements are simultaneously developed : sound, image and body. A fight that question situations of loss (balance, bearings, control, identity) in a hostile world. The image seeps into the body. The spectator is lost between illusion and reality. Doubt and fright gradually set in, inducing the spectator to notice tiny significant details and enter into a feeling of resistance or acceptance in front of overflow.
A.lter S.essio is a section led by Fabrice Planquette in artistic direction.
Each project is the result of a specific research, interdisciplinary and jointly among the team.

A.lter S.essio was founded by Fabrice Planquette in 1998. FP occasionally invites different artists to work with him on projects in any fields of art. He sets the rhythm and motion, and each artist brings along his or her own language, sensitivity and perspectives. The work moves forwards intuitively but can also jump from one idea to another. Ideas evolve, and expression is free-floating. Different modules see the light of day : acta, 0+1, consilium miscere, insula-insulae, loss, layers, endurance, etc, Each piece having its own specificity and evolving independently within a given theme. The expression is often repetitive, be it scenic, corporal, pictorial, tonal or textual. However, the modules are solely a way of setting out the work and are not necessarily a means to an end. They must not be perceived as a constraint but as a form of open expression in which each part exists as a whole without restraining a chronological presentation.

We have a worldwide approach to our work, both physically and metaphorically. All the elements move forwards together without order of rank. The approach is largely attached to senses and sensations. Some works are purely experimental, exploring a certain genre. Others, particularly installations and performances, suggest a vision, a perception or a description of the world and are staged around metaphorical situations like the creation of an in between state and getting lost in it. We want to explore limits. We want to enable the audience to really feel what the character feels within a given setting. We want to reveal a troubled, hazy world; the immersion of the masses within a process. These apparently abstract performances are paradoxically connected to reality ; they are tangible. The performers fire the action in their chosen way, personally engaging themselves in one direction or another. They feed on the unconsciousness of other unconscious states. Their objective is not to create a virtual (or entertaining) or pointless situation but to enter into a kind of introspective resonance with the audience; and perhaps to experiment with the conscious state of each one.

We by no means deny the technique necessary for the development of our projects. It has to be accepted and therefore transparent. We prefer necessity to gadget. This point is clear to us and the principle also applies to the choreography. The body is a receptacle for ideas, an incarnation of situations. The performance and choreography can be totally different from one dancer to another. The link between the presentations is what FP creates and of course the personality of the performer.

What interests us the most, outside the formality of the dance itself, is the way in which the situation will inhabit the body of the dancer, or how the character of the protagonist will inhabit this situation. In this respect the body participates in the emergence of a scene. It feeds on its surroundings or a given state to produce a reaction.

A.lter S.essio is a France-based artist collective with members Fabrice Planquette (conception, direction, audiovisual creation) and Yum Keiko Takayama (choreography, performance). Each project is the result of a specific research, interdisciplinary and jointly among the team. Guest artists bring along his or her own language, sensitivity and perspectives. The group creates dance-performances mixing contemporary and neo-butoh dance and audiovisual/digital development, also video series and installations. The work explores the
place of the individual in society and questions the conditions of the contemporary existence. Confrontation with the environment, oneself, each other, others… In background, these projects are focused on question of loss and the struggle it entails. Live or survive, it is between fight, collapse and game with a radical construction. All pieces are interconnected: continuation, complement, parallel, opposition. The components (body, image, sound, text) are treated equally without any particular priority. It tries to produce an incisive work, at the same time subtle and brutal. A.lter S.essio has presented in most European countries, as well as in South America, Canada, and Japan in very different kind of festivals (music, digital art, dance and performance.
