Alexander Ponomarev is represented by Formula. His installation consists of two eight metre long fibre glass containers filled with lagoon water. Within each are Sub-automobiles, bolides that seem to have fallen out of the blue, breaking through the Arsenale roof. Falling and rising, they set the rhythm for some phase transition, a state in which creativity is expressed by
the idea of Techne of the Antiquity without any division between technology and art. Alexander Ponomarev was born in Moscow, Russia (1957). He lives and works in Moscow.

Alexander Ponomarev is an artist and a sailor. In 1979 he graduated from the USSR Nautical Engineering College. His subsequent career as a seaman left an indelible mark on his artistic output, dominated by epic aquatic installations, none more spectacular than Maya: A Lost Island (2002) where, with the help of the Russian Fleet and an army of smoke canisters, Ponomarev provoked the disappearance of an island in the Barents Sea.
