ANTONY HALL

Antony Hall creates discrete objects that attempt to defy entropy, harnessing elements of potential or kinetic energy and self-perpetuation. His work explores mechanical or fluid motion as well as biological phenomenon such as the behavior of animals. These works are often miniscule or apparently simple; yet invite closer observation revealing deeper levels of complexity.

His working process involves locating and identifying behaviors and developing control
structures [devices & instruments] within which unique, specific phenomena can exist, for example; ‘Coffee Vortex’ [2002], or sustaining the the life of microorganisms in a droplet of water ‘Pond Life’ [2001]. These works assimilate phenomena, which being susceptible to change within themselves and the environment that directly surrounds them, require to be nurtured. Through presenting active investigative processes, the work is a continuous play on potential failure and possible solution, where failure is as important as resolution.

ENKI is a series of experiments in bio-interfacing between humans and certain types of Electrogenic Fish .. Ultimately this is achieved through psycho-acoustic audio and visual entrainment as a means of modulating human emotional state. During this process bio-electrical activity is monitored and used as a means to create a feedback loop between organisms.Bio-interface

The research aims to study interaction between tiny bio-electrical fields of both species [human and fish] specifically the they way in which these fields modulate and the means of controlling them. It also aims to discover if it is possible to create a harmonious state of interaction that can be of benefit to both species, no matter how different.

Since 2006 over 400 participants have taken part in four different versions of the experiment.

Antony Hall’s projects explore the way we interface with technology, and how our interactions with it influence us creatively and socially. Often collaborating with scientists and technologists, Hall is currently focusing his talent on the investigation of biological and physical phenomenon. Some of his recent experiments involve communication with an electric fish, the creation of life through growing crystals electrically on volcanic stone, hunting for Moss bears and training Planarian worms.

He gained fame in the media and media art festivals with his electro-acoustic sound art devices and performances. Together with Simon Blackmore and more recently Steve Symons, Hall is a founding member of the Owl Project, a group which combines woodwork with electronics to create performances, musical instruments (iLog , and Log1k) and other physical computing projects.
