Work: The Apaya Collection exemplifies Ayala Serfaty’s passionate research of textiles and light. Celebrating the inherent qualities of natural color and structure, wool becomes a sculptural carrier of light in a unique aesthetic way. The pieces in the Apaya Collection including the custom color finishes, are hand made using ecologically and environmentally friendly materials. As it combines ancient felting techniques with modern lighting technology the Collection safeguards heritage whilst re-inventing its future.

Apaya Collection is one of the lighting collections of Aqua Creations. Our atelier designs objects that function as art pieces. All our pieces are hand made to order and Aqua Creations is committed to design and produce site specific installations of any scale.

Apaya sind von Hand gefilzte Pendelleuchten der Firma Aqua Creations. Die Leuchten sind in verschiedenen Größen lieferbar. Durch die schönen, warmen Naturtöne bieten die Leuchten der Serie auch im ausgeschalteten Zustand eine optische Bereicherung für jede Wohnsituation.

Die Apaya Limited Edition ist eine Zusammenarbeit von Ayala Serfaty mit Textilkünstlerin Irit Dulman. Die Stücke sind jeweils nummeriert und signiert. Die Limited vereinigt alte handwerkliche Techniken wie das Filzen von Wolle mit moderner Lichttechnik. Die natürliche Farbe und faserige Struktur der Wolle verleiht den Lampen ein einzigartiges, ursprüngliches Aussehen. Die Apaya Limited Edition wird aus Naturfasern (Mohair, Seide und Wolle) hergestellt, die besonderen ökologischen und umweltfreundlichen Aspekten entsprechen. Die natürlichen Farben und Pigmente werden aus Pflanzen extrahiert und der Filz wird mit Hilfe einer organischen Mischung aus Olivenöl Seife gearbeitet. So entsteht eine Hülle, die über einen transparenten Zylinder gestülpt wird und damit je nach Stimmung oder Bedarf leicht ausgetauscht werden kann.

1962 in Tel Aviv, Israel geboren. Sie studierte Bildende Künste an der Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem und an der Middlesex Polytechnic in London. Ayala Serfaty nimmt mit ihren Werken Bezug auf das menschliche Wesen und den Kreislauf des Lebens und der Natur. Paola Antonelli, Kuratorin des Bereichs Design des MOMA, New York bezeichnet Serfaty als “the champion on the organic design”. 1994 gründete sie gemeinsam mit dem Fotografen Albi Serfaty die Firma Aqua Creations. Der”Israel Minister of Education and Culture’s annual Design Award”aus dem Jahr 2006 ist eine ihrer Auszeichnungen.

Die Firma Aqua Creations wurde 1994 von dem Ehepaar Albi und Ayala Serfaty gegründet. Die Designstücke der Firma unterscheiden sich sowohl in Formensprache als auch in Farb- und Materialauswahl erheblich von den Produkten anderer Leuchtenhersteller. In liebevoller Kleinarbeit werden die poetischen Leuchten und Möbel von Kunsthandwerkern hergestellt. Der Hauptsitz der Firma befindet sich in Tel Aviv. Zusätzlich hinzugekommen sind im Laufe der Jahre Ausstellungs-und Büroräume in New York und Shanhai.

Израильский дизайнер Аяла Серфати (Ayala Serfaty) основала компанию “Aqua creations” (Творения воды) вместе со своим мужем Алби Серфати (Albi Serfaty) в 1994 году, и остается единственным дизайнером компании.

Аяла Серфати в своих оигинальных светильниках и предметах мебели воплощает свои фантазии на тему водной стихии. Уникальные металлические конструкции, драпированные вручную натуральным шёлком-стрейч, которые в законченном варианте, предстают перед нами как ожившие обитатели морских глубин. В светильниках одни видят черты морских животных, другим они напоминают цветочные клумбы и пчелиные соты, третьи же воспринимают их как неповторимые дизайнерские объекты. Все светильники изготовлены в ручную из белого мохера или из мохера с добавлением цветной шерсти. Сначала материал прессуется, затем ему придают волнообразный силуэт и натягивают на стеклянный объем. Легкий пушистый материал светильников делает их похожими на медуз, почти неподвижно зависшими в толще воды.

Не случайно, она оказалась автором первого в мире подводного ресторана “Red Sea Star” в израильском городе Эйлате (Eilat).

Die Macher von Aqua Creations nutzen nur feinste Materialien, um ihre Leuchten der Serie “Apaya” zu fertigen: Neben Merino und Mohair-Wolle kommt reine Seide zum Einsatz.
Die Wolle wird mit viel Aufwand in Form gepresst und zu einzelnen Segmenten verarbeitet. Jede Leuchte ist ein Einzelstück und wird von Hand gemacht.
Die Seide macht aus “Apaya” eine Leuchte mit ganz besonders weichem Licht. Die Designerin Ayala Serfaty legt Wert darauf, dass ihre Unterwasserwelt von alleine steht – alle Teile der Serie “Apaya” sind Stehleuchten.
Aqua Creations zeigen die neuen Leuchten im April auf der Messe Light + Building in Frankfurt.

I chronicled my visit in the Tel Aviv studio of Ayala Serfaty in a video which is a part of the series Daniella on Design. I have first met Ayala five years ago when she had a solo show at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, an installation called SOMA. I remember being moved by the illuminated objects that looked like layers of white clouds, as light as drifting feathers, floating above ground. It suggested an underwater world of ultimate mystery and beauty.

Ayala Serfaty was born in Tel Aviv, in 1962. Since completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and the Middlesex Polytechnic in London, she has lived and worked in Tel Aviv.

Over the past twenty years Ayala Serfaty has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Her solo shows have included venues such as the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Museum Beelden Aan Zee, Den Haag, Netherlands. She has participated in group shows in venues including Herzliya Museum of art in Israel, London Design Museum, Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design in Nuremberg, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Ayala Serfaty’s work is found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Museum of Arts and Design in New York, Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Clear 2011, from the Soma series, was recently auctioned at Sotheby’s NY for inexcess of 100,000 usd. Ayala Serfaty’s work is represented by gallery BSL, Paris, and Maison Gerard, NY.
