Desert Breath

Desert Breath is a Land Art project created by D.A.ST. Arteam. The team was founded in 1995 by: Danae Stratou (installation artist), Alexandra Stratou (industrial designer & architect), Stella Constantinides (architect), for the purpose of creating this project.
The project is rooted in our common desire to work in the desert. In our mind’s eye the desert was a place where one experiences infinity. We were addressing the desert as a state of mind, a landscape of the mind. The point of departure was the conical form, the natural formation of the sand as a material.
Desert Breath expands in an area of 100.000 m2, in the eastern Sahara desert bordering the Red Sea in El Gouna, Egypt. It is a site-specific work that generated out of our perception of the site itself. Its construction consists of the displacement of 8.000 m3 of sand formed so as to create precise positive and negative conical volumes. The conical volumes form two interlocking spirals that move out from a common centre with a phase difference of 180o degrees in the same direction of rotation. The centre is a 30-metre diameter vessel formed in a W-shaped section and filled with water to its rim.
Located between the sea and a body of mountains at the point where the immensity of the sea meets the immensity of the desert, the work functions on two different levels in terms of viewpoint: from above as a visual image, and from the ground, walking the spiral pathway, a physical experience.
The construction of Desert Breath was completed in March 1997. Desert Breath still exists becoming through its slow disintegration, an instrument to measure the passage of time.

Impossível ficar indiferente a esta formação em espiral, composta por 89 cones no deserto do Saara, na borda entre o Mar Vermelho, na localidade de El Gouna, no Egito. A grande estrutura, construída também para registar a passagem do tempo, poderia muito bem ser obra de uma civilização desconhecida ou da Antiguidade, como os egípcios e suas pirâmides – VEJA MAIS FOTOS >> Contudo, estas intrigantes estruturas em formas de cones são obra de um grupo de de arte grego chamado D.A.S.T, que desenvolveu o chamado “Desert Breath” (“Respiração do Deserto”, em uma tradução livre). O trabalho consiste em duas espirais formadas por cones que saem de um imenso cone central. Em uma espiral, os cones são positivos, formando uma monte; na outra, eles são negativos, ou seja, foram escavados em forma de cone na areia. O cone central é uma espécie de recipiente gigante cavado no deserto, com 30 metros de diâmetro, composto por uma seção em formato de W, que foi preenchido com água. O projeto foi finalizado em 1997 e persiste até hoje nas areias do Saara como uma forma de lembrar a imensidão do deserto e também de analisar a ação da areia e dos ventos que, vagarosamente, vão transformando e deteriorando o projeto. O “Desert Breath” se espalha por 100 mil metros quadrados e sua construção exigiu a remoção de 8 mil metros cúbicos de areia para criar cones negativos e positivos que foram medidos de maneira precisa.

I imagine two parallel realities in the way that we view the world. There is the world inside and the world outside of us. It is through the senses that we are able to connect the inside to the outside world. My whole life, including the choice to become an artist, has been an attempt to re-search, to understand, and to connect these two parallel realities. To bridge what is within to what is without…
Naturally my works are triggered or have a point of departure either in the external or in the internal world. Initially, an idea is generated in the form of an internal image, which in turn needs to be answered intellectually and put into context. This process seems to me to have its point of departure in the world of the subconscious, which then surfaces into the conscious realm. Following from there, the initial idea decodes itself as it evolves into realisation and ends up ‘translating itself’ in to an artwork. It is a bit like a journey, which slowly reveals itself as I journey towards it.
The reason why most of my work takes the form of tactile, multimedia installations lies in my aim to involve the viewer in a physical way; to enable her or him to become immersed into it. In order to achieve this physical ‘pull’ I often use rhythm and repetitive movement. They reflect the pulse and recurrence that are constitutive of life. They are basic elements of life itself. Rhythm and repetition help open up and prepare the mind for the elusive connection of the conscious and subconscious worlds.

El artista Danae Stratou y el equipo de arte DAST, a mitad de los 90’s crearon este trabajo en tierra y lo llamaron “Desert Breath” (Respiro del Desierto, significado en español).

Estos extraños conos y agujeros, se encuentran ubicados en el “Desierto Egipcio”, cerca del “The Red Sea” (Mar Rojo, significado en español).

Abarcan 100,000 mil metros cuadrados y les tomo varios años crearla, en su centro hubo un estanque de agua bastante profundo, y una de las ideas en el diseño del proyecto fue para que se fuera erosionando, que es exactamente lo que a sucedido desde su creación.

На первый взгляд эти странные конусы и воронки из египетской пустыни кажутся всего лишь необычными ветровыми образованиями, но стоит подняться на высоту птичьего полета, и вы увидите узор, который они формируют. Это сооружение, созданное в середине 1990-ых греческим художником Дэном Страту (Danae Stratou) и группой DAST, называется «Дыхание пустыни». Оно занимает площадь 100 000 квадратных метров и расположено в пустыне, в Египте, неподалеку от Красного моря. Создание этого произведения искусства заняло несколько лет. В центре находился довольно глубокий бассейн с водой, а весь проект был выполнен так, чтобы со временем постепенно разрушаться от эрозии. Что, как видно, и произошло. “Дыхание пустыни” создал человек, точнее группа людей, притом не так давно. (Группа D.A.ST. – сотрудничество между тремя художниками: Danae Stratou, Скульптор, Александра Стратоу, Индустриальный Проектировщик, и Стелла Константинайдс, Архитектор. Группа была сформирована в мае 1995, основанная на общем желании создать установку в пустыне. Участок, который был выбран – плоское пространство песка, который находится между Красным морем и телом гор. Работа покрывает область ста тысяч квадратных метров и вовлекает смещение восьми тысяч кубических метров песка. Сто семьдесят восемь конических объемов формируют две взаимосвязанных логарифмических спирали, которые перемещаются из общего центра с различием фазы ста восемидесяти степеней в том же самом руководстве вращения. Одна спираль состоит из вогнутых конусов, в то время как другие выпуклых. Центр- глиняное судно с секцией W – союз положительного и отрицательного конуса. Если ёмкость заполнить водой, выдающийся конус в центре сформирует крошечный остров на уровне горизонта. 7 марта 1997 было закончено строительство “Дыхание пустыни”.

En 1997 l’artiste grecque Danae Stratou a crée une oeuvre sur plus de 100 000 mètres carrés, en plein désert du Sahara, proche de la mer rouge. Sa construction a consisté en de vastes volumes de sable déplacés afin de créer des volumes coniques très précis pour former une immense spirale avec pour centre d’un bassin de 30m rempli d’eau … la construction a pris plus de deux ans et fut laissé là à l’emprise naturelle de l’érosion .. il en reste encore des traces …
