Work: In Emil Alzamora’s sculpture, concept meets craft at a very high level, a union as rare as the teeth of the proverbial hen. With the general de-skilling of art and the rise of conceptual strategies, which have gone hand-in-hand since the early 1960s, it has been too little noted that what amounts to an old-fashioned, Henry-Fordish division of labor has taken over in the art world. The “artist,” who is really the entrepreneur and jefe, commands an army of assistants, often from the developing world and just as often poorly paid, to produce work that ranges from the grandiose and trivial to the impossibly elaborate. No argument from this quarter against Francesco Clemente’s miniatures or Jeff Koons’ chrome bunny, not to mention Roni Horn’s glass cubes, but I can’t help thinking of St. Clair Cemin’s term: “mental readymades.” In contrast, certain artists continue to demonstrate that knowledge of materials and, more importantly, of techniques, opens doors to imagery that can’t simply be “conceived” out of the cultural ether. I am thinking of sculptors such as Cemin, Kiki Smith, Pier Consagra, Martin Puryear, and others such as the embroidery artist Angelo Filomeno. So add Emil Alzamora to the list. -Lyle Rexer. Emil Alzamora was born in Lima, Peru in 1975. His family moved to Boca Grande, Florida when he was two. He later attended Florida State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1998 earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. Alzamora harnesses a wide range of materials and techniques to deliver unexpected interpretations of the sculpted human figure. He often distorts, elongates, deconstructs, or encases his forms to reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell a story. Alzamora’s keen interest in the physical properties of his materials combined with his hands-on approach allow for the process to reveal and inform at once the aesthetic and the conceptual. Alzamora started his sculpting career in the Hudson Valley of New York working with Polich Tallix in the fall of 1998. Since his departure from the art foundry in early 2001, he has produced his work full-time and shown regularly throughout the United States and Europe. Alzamora’s works have been exhibited in multiple solo and group shows, many national and international art fairs as well as the United Nations Building, Pepsico World Headquarters, The Queens Museum of Art, The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, and The Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas. His work has been reviewed by publications such as The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, The L Magazine, El Diario, Boston Metro News, Juxtapoz, High Fructose, ArteFuse and Cool Hunting. He currently lives and works in Beacon, NY.

Né au Pérou en 1975, formé en Floride et résidant maintenant à New-York, Emil Alzamora sculpte le corps. Parfois classiques, souvent surréalistes mais toujours habitées, ces oeuvres traduisent l’émotion qu’impose l’enveloppe charnelle, dans ses potentialités comme dans ses limitations. Distorsions, hybridations ou, au contraire, traditions représentatives, chaque pièce crie et incarne le combat auquel nous soumettent nos morphologies.

Artist Statement:
The human form is a constant within my work. I often exaggerate or distort it to reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell a story. Limitation and potential are as human as the flesh, yet hardly as tangible. In my works I strive to make visible this interaction.

He later attended Florida State University where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1998 earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. “A forma humana é uma constante no meu trabalho. Costumo exagerá-la ou distorcê-la a fim de revelar uma situação emocional ou física, ou para contar uma história. Emil Alzamora nasceu na cidade de Lima, em 1975, e cresceu em Boca Grande, uma pequena ilha na costa da Florida, EUA. Graduado em artes plásticas na faculdade local, desenvolveu sua técnica trabalhando na oficina de esculturas Polich Art Works, em 1998. No começo dos anos 2000 passou a dedicar-se integralmente à sua produção artística e desde então tem constantemente realizado exposições na Europa e nos Estados Unidos.
As esculturas figurativas de Emil Alzamora sacodem nossas concepções do corpo clássico. Abraçando ao mesmo tempo o belo e o grotesco, suas figuras se contorcem sensualmente no espaço, parecendo desafiar a gravidade. Trabalhando principalmente com gesso e bronze, o artista cria formas não-ortodoxas do corpo humano, estendendo e revirando membros para além dos seus limites naturais. Ao exagerar ou distorcer o ser, o artista conta uma estória conduzida por experiência emocionais e físicas, objetivamente tornar visível a interação entre corpo e alma.
Ao passo que suas obras não escondem uma educação clássica, também revelam sua liberdade expressiva. Em entrevista recente, Alzamora reflete sobre esta dualidade em seu trabalho a partir da influência de mestres da escultura: “Michelangelo, Rodin, e Bernini realmente capturaram algo além dos materiais, algo além da artificialidade [de uma escultura]. Eles criaram um retrato de algo que tinha a capacidade de atingir o espectador em certos aspectos que somente um ser humano seria capaz. Foi a ilusão do assombro da vida que me levou a querer capturá-la de todo jeito, e descobrir o que pode ser dito nesse contexto.”

Ich bin sicherlich kein Kunstexperte und trotzdem interessiert mich das ganz schon ziemlich. Surrealismus ist eher so ne Sparte für “Andersdenkende” deshalb ist es mir wohl nicht gegeben tiefer über diese Kunstwerke nachzudenken und was Emil Alzamora mit seine Skulpturen sagen will weiß nur der Geier, trotzdem sehen sie allesamt bewundernswert aus.

Разглеждайки хората сантиметър по сантиметър, всички части от тялото им ни се струват абсолютно нормални. Толкова сме свикнали с външния си вид, че рядко нещо ни прави впечатление. Но когато част от нас бъде трансформирана драстично, така че да предизвиква зрелищно внимание, дали отново бихме се приемали за нормални? За скулптора Емил Амзамора точно тези външни впечатления за човешката обвивка и възможността им да бъде трансформирана е основна тема в творбите му. Той коментира:
„Човешката форма е константна величина в моята работа. Проучвам това, какво всъщност означава да обитаваш едни, често преувеличени или нарушени в различни аспекти форми. Така разкривам една емоционална или физическа ситуация, разказвам история за затруднение или поява. Ограничението и потенциала са изключително човешки качества, но те не се виждат в материалния свят. В моите творби се стремя към това, да направя видимо това взаимодействие.” Всяка скулптура преминава през добре обмислен проект, преди да бъде създадена. Работи изключително изобретателно с гипс, пластмаса и монтажна пяна. Творбите му са уникално опростени, деликатни, но свръхчуствителни. Чрез удължаване на врата, краката или ръцете, одебеляване на стомаха или прибавяне на второ лице, работите на Емил Алзамора се превръщат в крещящи символи на човешките възможности на външния и вътрешния свят. Емил Алзамора е роден през 1975 година в Лима, Перу, но е израстнал е в Бока Гранде, Флорида. През 1998 година завършва с отличие бакалавърска степен по изящни изкуства. В момента живее в Бейкън, Ню Йорк, където създава умопормачителните си човешки обвивки.

人从哪里来,到哪里去,人为什么活着,一直以来我们在寻找着答案。Emil Alzamora 埃米尔·阿尔萨莫拉也希望通过他的雕塑作品告诉我们答案。他通过夸张或扭曲人的外形特征,来揭露生理或心理上的情感,也借此表达其中所处的困境或已发生的事实。通过对人的局限性和潜力的再思考,来展现人类在发展中的不断自我认知和自我反省。
Emil Alzamora 埃米尔·阿尔萨莫拉1975年出生于秘鲁首都利马,在美国佛罗里达州波卡洛兰德长大,进入佛罗里达州立大学,于1998年以优异成绩获得艺术学士学位。   
  1998年秋,毕业后的阿尔萨莫拉进入Polich艺术铸造厂,开始他的雕塑艺术生涯。2001年离开后,开始在纽约、波士顿、缅因和佛罗里达等四处创作并巡展。目前居住在纽约州的Beacon。
  人啊,低下高傲的头,重新审视我们自身,看看现实世界因我们而发生怎样的改变,在这样的改变中我们又将如何改变。可以肯定的是,我们需要在如今的现实世界中,寻求与自然的融合,并重新融入自然,与自然共存。也许这是他通过作品要告诉我们的。
 从小受艺术家母亲的影响,阿尔萨莫拉就显露出艺术方面的天赋。从雕塑大师米开朗基罗,罗丹,贝尔尼尼等汲取灵感,凭借着对铸造材料特性的熟知,他自由地发挥艺术想象,赋予雕塑作品丰富的生命力和内涵。
