Spacial Drawings is comprised of several large-scale sculptures made of interconnected, hand-bent, solid hardwood planks whose curves and twists create “drawings” in three-dimensional space. By rendering hardwood pliable and then bending it in unusual ways, Hermant treats the wood as a kind of three-dimensional thread.

Emily Hermant received her BFA from Concordia University in 2004 and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010. She has exhibited widely in museums, galleries and festivals in Canada, the United States, South America, and Europe, most recently at Artspace Contemporary Art Projects in Peterborough, ON (2012), Durand Art Institute at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, IL (2012), Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, VA (2012), Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, DE (2012), Artcite Inc. in Windsor, ON (2012), Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA (2011), Articule in Montréal, QC (2010), Hyde Park Art Center and DOVA Temporary at the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL (both 2010), Triennale di Milano Museum in Milan, Italy (2009) and at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York (2007-8). Her work has been reviewed in numerous publications, including Espace Sculpture, The Washington Post, Time Out Chicago, the Village Voice and American Craft Magazine. In 2011-12, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor in Craft & Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University; this year (2012-13), she is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Studio Arts at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Emily Hermant, née à Toronto en 1980, est une artiste en installations et textiles demeurant à Montréal. Elle a reçu avec distinction un Baccalauréat spécialisé en arts plastiques et en religion de l’Université Concordia. Elle a exposé à Montréal et à l’étranger.
