Did you know that you could make the light move like a tennis ball? This has been successfully achieved by a creative studio through an experiment that combines art and physical kinematics. We make you discover this video.

Espadaysantacruz is a Spanish studio of designers and experimenters, based in Madrid. This studio specializes in artistic experiences and scientific projects using light. They already have dozens such visual and interactive experience to their credit. The latest is called Light Kinetics and is particularly amazing: it gives “life” to the light and makes it move as if it was a tennis ball.

This new experience is related to “physical reality” of light: that is to say, a way for it to become palpable, tangible. This experiment was conducted using a physical simulator made using a PCB board with Arduino processor controlling 28 different channels, “treating light as if governed by the laws of motion.”

The studio says at its site of The Creators Project : “Light Kinetics is an experimental prototype. A gyroscope feeds its measurement to a the Adruino which in turn controls a set of switches. And even if the project is digital, it shows a feeling … an analog behavior. The light seems to follow the law of mechanics and that is what creates this ‘magic’ effect. “

The designers at Espadaysantacruz also explain that they have not used diodes, including LEDs, found in many current artistic projects. Instead, they only wanted to use the incandescent light bulbs.” According to them traditional bulbs give a physical existence to light which is not the case with the LEDs. Somehow, they think themselves to be digital artists using bulbs as their raw material.

This experience is simply fascinating! Seeing the light move from bulb to bulb through the movement of a board is really surprising. We are struggling to understand how the studio Espadaysantacruz mastered the physical and technological prowess involved in the project. Si nos dijeran que la luz puede deslizarse por un balancín como si fuera una pelota, podríamos pensar que nos hablan de magia o brujería, una experiencia en la que las leyes de la naturales se ponen patas arriba. Pues no. Esto es Light Kinetic, un proyecto de arte cinético que está triunfando en la red y que hasta uno de los más importantes referentes de la tecnología moderna a nivel internacional ya lo ha publicado: The Creators Project;

También encontramos este proyecto en otras webs conocidas como en la ya mítica YOROKOBU o en el Daily Geek Show. Pero lo mejor de todo (a parte del proyecto en sí, claro) es que alumnos del IED Design han colaborado en la producción del mismo:

Alejandro López Bravo y Lucas Ortiz Estefanell, estudiantes de 4º del Título Superior de Diseño de Producto, se han encargado del diseño del objeto, el soporte físico y la instalación del Light Kinetics. Además, Alejandro y Lucas continuarán trabajando con espadaysantacruz en el diseño de más prototipos con el mismo funcionamiento de balanceo.

The studio has four members who are professionals with different backgrounds in the fields of information technology, audiovisual creation, photography and cultural management. We also rely upon a large team of collaborators with whom we share the same vision of work and visual experimentation.

Saviez-vous que l’on pouvait rendre la lumière « vivante » ? C’est ce qu’a réussi à faire un studio très créatif à travers une expérience lumineuse qui allie art et physique cinématique. DGS vous la fait découvrir en vidéo. Espadaysantacruz est un studio espagnol de créateurs et d’expérimentateurs, basé à Madrid. Ce studio se spécialise sur des expériences, des projets artistiques et scientifiques basés sur la lumière. Ils ont déjà plusieurs dizaines d’expériences visuelles et interactives à leur actif. La dernière en date se nomme Light Kinetics et est particulièrement étonnante : elle donne « vie » à la lumière et la fait bouger comme si elle était une balle de tennis.

Cette nouvelle expérience s’intéresse à la « réalité physique » de la lumière : c’est-à-dire à une façon pour elle de devenir palpable, concrète. Elle a été réalisée en utilisant un simulateur physique créé à partir de Processing et de circuits imprimés Arduino qui contrôlent 28 chaînes différentes, « traitant la lumière comme de la matière régie par les lois du mouvement ».

Le studio explique au site The Creators Project : « Light Kinetics est un prototype expérimental. Un gyroscope alimente un moteur physique qui contrôle un set d’interrupteurs. Et même si le projet est numérique, il en ressort un sentiment… d’un comportement analogique. La lumière paraît suivre les loi de la mécanique et c’est ce qui crée cet effet ‘magique’. »Les créateurs chez Espadaysantacruz expliquent également qu’ils ont tenu à ne pas utiliser de diodes, notamment de LED, que l’on retrouve dans de nombreux projets artistiques actuels.

À la place, ils ont souhaité seulement utiliser des ampoules à lumière incandescente. « Cela maintient un attachement à la matérialité. Les ampoules traditionnelles ont une qualité physique que les LED ne possèdent pas. Elles ont une aura spéciale. D’une certaine manière, nous aimons penser que nous sommes des artisans numériques et que les ampoules sont nos matières premières.
Cette expérience est tout simplement fascinante ! Voir la lumière se mouvoir ainsi d’ampoule en ampoule grâce aux mouvements d’une planche, c’est vraiment surprenant. Certains à la rédaction ont d’ailleurs encore du mal à comprendre comment le studio Espadaysantacruz a réussi cette prouesse physique et technologique. Notre expérience créative avec la lumière se limite aux fonctions ON/OFF des interrupteurs et à quelques changements d’abats-jours ? Pas pour le brillant Studio Espacedaysantacruz dont les talents se présentent comme de véritables dompteurs de technologies visuelles et audiovisuelles. Dans le studio créé à Madrid en 2008, les artistes officient et développent des expériences interactives grâce à leur travail de l’image et à leurs recherches en matière de technologie digitale. « Light kinetic » est une démonstration épatante de leur travail.
