A performance on Augmented and Mixed reality

In these days Smartphones have turned out to be one of the most important technical devices available to the average consumer. They have become a tool for communication that can be used for many more things than making phone calls. The development of the applications – so called apps – has got a deep impact on our daily life.The cell phone is also called the 7th mass medium and it allows people to link with each other whenever they want.
In his new project Fabien Prioville wants to research on the use of Smartphones during a dance performance. Usually people have to turn off their phones once they enter a theatre venue. In this piece Fabien lifts the ban and invites the audience to download an app from the Android or Apple store and to communicate with the dancers during the show.

Please, turn on your mobile phones – choreographer Fabian Prioville suspends a common rule of theater. At first he asks the audience to download an app and to communicate with the dancers during the performance via smartphone. “The Smartphone Project” incorporates the possibilities of the digital toy that has started as an exclusive status symbol and has advanced to one of the central media of communication of our time. The performance puts the potential of so called “applications” to deliver perfect informations at any time and the omnipresence of cell phone photos and movies, filtering our sense of reality, into an artistic context. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology in Bonn who just for this performance programmed a special app, Fabien Prioville together with former Pina Bausch dancer Pascal Merighi and actress Florence Minder creates a fusion of contemporary dance, media technology and performance. Fabien Prioville danced with La LaLa Human Steps, the company of the Canadian Choreographer Édouard Lock, in Sweden with Philipp Blanchard and in 1999 became ensemble member of the Wuppertaler Tanztheater. Since 2006 he has developed choreographies of his own and has worked among others in projects with artists like Josef Nadj and Davis Freeman.

Prière de ne pas éteindre vos téléphones portables pendant la représentation ! Pour une fois, nous vous demanderons au contraire de les activer et d’utiliser une application spécialement conçue pour la performance. Le danseur et chorégraphe Fabien Prioville emploie le smartphone comme point de départ de son spectacle et s’interroge sur ses pouvoirs comme agitateur et amplificateur de la réalité. À partir d’une structure chorégraphique pour trois interprètes, il invite le spectateur à interagir en direct, par la simple manipulation de son téléphone, avec les corps dansants. L’oeuvre devient alors collaborative et la puissance technologique capable de modifier le réel.

Das Bonner Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Informationstechnik programmierte für die Performance eine App, die sich jeder Zuschauer vor der Vorstellung mit der netten Unterstützung der Schauspielerin Florence Minder auf iPhones oder Android-tauglichen Handys herunterzuladen sollte. Die Handys blieben während der ganzen Vorstellung an. Sollte jemand angerufen werden, wurde es ihm überlassen, ob er abnimmt und mit dem Anruf zum Teil der Performance wird oder nicht. Leider klingelte kein Handy „unerwartet“ während des ausverkauften Stücks.

Nachdem man die Nummer seines Sitzes eingegeben hatte, ging es los. Ein Handy klingelte auf der Bühne so lange bis ein Zuschauer dahin ging und abhieb. Danach bekam er Anweisungen, zwei Sessel auf die Bühne mit Hilfe der auf dem Boden gezeichneten Markierungen in die richtige Position zu bringen.

Fabien Prioville, Pascal Merighi und Florence Minder führten die Zuschauer auf eine spannende Reise begleitet von Tanz und Interaktion und übernahmen abwechselnd die „Flugzeugdurchsagen“. Es wurde getanzt und gesprochen.

Zuschauer mit iPhones gingen mit Fabien und Pascal raus. Andere mit Android-tauglichen Handys blieben im Saal und entdeckten mit der App Botschaften auf dem Mantel von Florance. Man durfte Video drehen oder eigene Musik zum Tanzen anbieten.

Wieder Platz genommen, leuchteten Handy-Displays und forderten zum Eingeben von Antworten an. Soll Florance ein schwarzes, rotes oder blaues Kleid anziehen? Oder eine blonde, rothaarige oder schwarze Perücke? Bitte mit A, B oder C abstimmen und Florance gemeinsam stylen.

Nach dem „Experiment on Chatting Bodies“ wartete man gespannt auf das nächste Tanzprojekt von Fabien Prioville. Die Kombination einer Live-Performance auf der Bühne und einer parallelen Tanzperformance per Live-Skype-Schaltung war wirklich anregend und überraschend anders. Das neue Handy-Experiment enttäuscht nicht; es ist ebenfalls abwechslungs- und entdeckungsreich.

Und sobald die Zuschauer ihre Anregungen an die Tänzer geschickt haben, werden diese das Stück verfeinert und noch raffinierter gestalten. Wir wünschen viel Erfolg und sind auf das nächste Experiment gespannt!

The Smart Phone Project ist eine Produktion der fabien prioville dance company, koproduziert durch das tanzhaus nrw und das Ballet National de Marseille, in Kooperation mit dem Fraunhofer Institut für Angewandte Informationstechnik FIT. Mehrere Förderer (u.a. das Ministerium für Innovation, Wissenschaft und Forschung des Landes NRW und die Kunststiftung NRW) haben sich zusammengefunden, um dieses Experiment möglich zu machen. Fabien Prioville tanzte bei La La La Human Steps des kanadischen Choreografen Édouard Lock, in Schweden bei Philipp Blanchard und war ab 1999 Ensemblemitglied beim Wuppertaler Tanztheater. Seit 2006 entwickelt er eigene Choreografien und arbeitete u.a. in Projekten mit Künstlern wie Josef Nadj und Davis Freeman zusammen.

Fabien Prioville graduated at the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) in Angers. After this, he worked with Édouard Lock and his company La La La Human Steps in Canada before going to Philippe Blanchard in Stockholm. In 1999, he went to Pina Bausch´s Tanztheater Wuppertal. He has been working as a freelance dancer and choreographer since 2006 with Josef Nadj and Davis Freeman, among others. Remittance work brought him to New York’s Juilliard School and to Japan and Australia.

In 2010 he founded his own dance company and since then he has created two pieces. His solo “Jailbreak Mind” was created in 2009 in co-production with the tanzhaus nrw and Trafó Budapest and is still touring internationally. With this piece he was invited to the German Tanzplattform in Nürnberg.

His trio „NOUS“, is the second co-production with tanzhaus nrw and Trafó Budapest. It premiered in February 2011 at the festival Temps d’images. For the year 2012 he is preparing his next piece as a co-production with tanzhaus nrw and the Attakkalari Biennale in Bangalore / India. .

In 1999, he became part of Pina Bausch´s Tanztheater Wuppertal. He has been working as a freelance dancer and choreographer since 2006 with Josef Nadj and Davis Freeman, among others. Remittance work brought him to New York’s Juilliard School and to Japan and Australia. The Fabien Prioville Dance Company is situated in Düsseldorf. Since 2009, it has been cooperating with the tanzhaus nrw, Düsseldorf, with plays moving between performing arts and multimedia.

Fabien Prioville´s plays all share a common basis of contrasts and opposites. His artistic focus lies on the exploration of the inner emotional world of the human being. He is searching for clear pictures for everyday impressions and observations, shedding light on emotions or converting them into their opposites. He created his first feature-length solo choreography Jailbreak Mind, with which he was also invited to the German Dance Platform 2010. In collaboration with Pascal Merighi, a former dancer of the Pina Bausch-Ensemble, he premiered his last production Experiment on Chatting Bodies in 2012 in Düsseldorf.

En 1999, il intègre le Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Depuis 2006, il est danseur et chorégraphe indépendant avec, entre autres, Josef Nadj et Davis Freeman. Ses projets l’ont mené entre autres à la Juilliard School de New York, au Japon et en Australie.

En 2010, il fonde sa propre compagnie, avec laquelle il a créé cinq pièces jusqu’à ce jour. Son solo Jailbreak Mind est créé en 2009 en coproduction avec tanzhaus nrw et Trafó Budapest. Cette pièce, qui est encore présentée à l’internationale, lui a valu une invitation à la Tanzplattform à Nuremberg. Présenté en première au festival Temps d’images en 2011, son trio NOUS est sa deuxième coproduction tanzhaus nrw et Trafó Budapest. En 2012, il travaille à une coproduction avec tanzhaus nrw et la biennale Attakkalari à Bangalore (Inde). Dans Experiment on Chatting Bodies, sa troisième coproduction avec tanzhaus nrw, Fabien Prioville et Pascal Merighi interagissent avec différentes personnes via Skype. Il poursuit ce travail dans the smartphone project, une production fonctionnant avec une application de AppleStore et GoogleStore et coproduite avec le Fraunhofer FIT Bonn, tanzhaus nrw et BNM Marseille. Sa toute dernière œuvre est time for us, un duo avec Azusa Seyama Prioville, sa femme, qui est également membre de la compagnie Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
