O artista visual Frank Halmans, nascido em 1963 na cidade de Heerlen, Holanda, transita entre a arquitetura, o design e as artes plásticas. Porém antes de mais nada, repensa e questiona noções referentes ao espaço: o público e privado, habitável e inabitável, o espaço físico e suas relações com o homem, a memória que criamos nos relacionando com os espaços. Ele usa diferentes maneiras de expressão e linguagem para abordar o tema.

Com o uso de materiais e objetos apropriados e de uso impessoal, ele constrói novas formas, ressignificando objetos e espaços. Na série do trabalho ‘Hoover Buildings’ ele constrói, a partir aspiradores, apartamentos em miniatura onde conservando a função primária do objeto, disponibiliza ao espectador um sistema de sucção que leva ao interior dessas pequenas habitações o que se encontra em seu exterior. Levamos a partir do mecanismo de sucção do aspirador, os resíduos de um ambiente externo para o interior da maquete, onde aquela poeira se decanta, se acumula, se torna parte de um novo ambiente. Existe nesse trabalho uma metáfora referente à relação dos espaços internos e externos. O artista conta que o seu trabalho “é uma metáfora para as coisas que nós vivenciamos e colecionamos mentalmente em nossa memória e fisicamente em nossas vidas.”

Se torna possível habitar o vazio, assim como habitar o interior de um livro: Em sua série Built of Books o artista recorta, corta, cava e atravessa as páginas e capas de grossos e coloridos livros, criando janelas, telhados, portas e chaminés. As construções trazem em si uma estética fortemente holandesa.

Em outro trabalho, explora o espaço que uma cama ocuparia, colocando sobre esta quatro pequenas camas, ou berços.

Frank Halmans brinca com coisas e ideias. Ele usa objetos cotidianos, encontrados na rua ou comprados em mercados de pulga, dá novos significados. O material da loja de lixo é transformado em imagens de memórias pessoais dele e dos seus espectadores.

his series ‘built of books’ employs vintage publications – the selected titles have no particular meaning and are not exceptional literary works – which he arranges into stacks. lining them up along shelves, he carving windows and doors through each, creating sets of imaginary buildings and interiors in each section of volumes. in a way these spaces which he slices through the books, stand as a metaphor and the idea of moving through something, whether it be a literary passage, or a physical expanse.

dutch artist frank halmans often explores the domestic world through his work, considering our homes as places where our lives transition between the public and private realm, and how we inhabit these two worlds of existence differently. his series of functioning vacuums which he has transformed into ‘works of architecture’ – representing our households and personal space – emphasize this theme, blurring the line between the interior and exterior. here, halman has taken an appliance which we use to clean and de-clutter our dwellings and has modified its role. instead now, dirt and the debris is purposely sucked into the domestic interior, within these imagined dwellings, standing as a metaphor for the things which we experience and collect mentally in our memory and physically in our lives.

Hij plaatste planken met boeken zonder dat het boekenplanken zijn. De boeken, niemendalletjes, zijn door Halmans getransformeerd tot spelers van een spel met associatie, vorm en herinnering. Zonder specifieke spelregels; ‘Alleen een bepaald gevoel, dat herken ik dan, dat heeft iets te vertellen, dat is voldoende.’ Dus wie een fractie langer kijkt ziet een huis en wie nog iets langer kijkt ziet een dramatisch vuur. En neem je echt de tijd, dan vertellen ook de restvormen en zelfs de titels van die weinig opzienbarende boeken je nog veel meer. ‘Als je er oog voor hebt, word je getrakteerd. En anders niet.’
Halmans klimt graag uit de ivoren kunsttoren om werk voor de publieke ruimte te maken, werk dat toetsbaar is. Zijn oplossingen voor speelpleinen en monumenten zijn inventief en open, niet te rigide om zich verschillende toepassingen te laten aanleunen. Sinds maart 2015 is voor het Mondriaanhuis te Amersfoort, samenvallend met het straatbeeld van de Kortegracht, zijn uitgesproken speelse monument voor de in Amersfoort geboren Mondriaan te zien.
Frank Halmans (Heerlen, 1965) is sinds de start van De Vensterbank in 2013 de achtste kunstenaar. Kunstbeschouwer Jantine Kremer ontmoette hem in zijn atelier in Bunnik. Jolanda Meulendijks legde deze ontmoeting vast op foto.
