Günther Uecker (German b.1930)
Our projects of today are the realities of tomorrow. Whatever exists in our imagination is an integral part of ourselves. Experience is imagination carried over into the sensual sphere.
Günther Uecker is a German sculptor, op and installation artist and a major player in the European avant-garde of the second half of the twenty century.
Uecker artistic education began in 1949 at Wismar and continued in Berlin-Weifirst and in Düsseldorf after where he had the opportunity to study under Otto Pankok at the Kunstakademie.
In 1956-57, Uecker began incorporating nails in his paintings while focusing mainly on the colours white, black and red together with dots and vertical or horizontal lines. One of his famous art works is White Field (1964) from the Fields in Movement series, made from painted nails on painted canvas in such a way that the surface of the artwork seems to be in movement.
In those years, Uecker came in contact with the group ZERO, the international art movement founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene that propagated a new beginning of art in opposition to the German Art Informel. In 1958 Mack and Peine organized and hosted their first show in their studio in Düsseldorf. Uecker participated in the exhibition, which became a starting point for the formation of the ZERO group, although Uecker did not formally join until 1961. Uecker began to work with Mack and Piene in joint studios at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1962 and installed a ‘Salon de Lumière’ at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Other ‘light salons’ followed in Krefeld and in Frankfurt. His main interest was to work with the effects of light and optical phenomena together with series of structures in the realms of oscillation which actively integrate the viewer and enable him to influence the visual process by kinetic or manual interference.
Eventually in 1966 the group ZERO dissolved, and, since then, Uecker increasingly used nails as an artistic means of expression – a material which, until today, stands in the centre of his oeuvre and never stopped to change in the procedure. At the beginning of the 1960s he began hammering nails into pieces of furniture, musical instruments and household objects, and then he began combining nails with the theme of light, creating his series of light nails and kinetic nails and other works. Light and electricity continued to be one of the main subjects and natural materials such as sand and water were included in his installations, resulting in an interaction of the different elements to create a sensation of light, space, movement and time.
Günther Uecker’s oeuvre includes a large range of painting, object art, installations as well as stage designs and films. His origins explain his interest in the eastern European avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, but he is likewise interested in Asian cultures.
His works are included in the collections of numerous public institutions such as the Calderara Foundation Collection in Milan, the Courtauld Istitute of Art in London, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Tate Modern in London.
With Otto Piene, Heinz Mack and Mattijis Visser, he founded in 2008 the international ZERO foundation. The foundation has the complete ZERO archives from the three Düsseldorfer artists as well as documents and photos from other related artist.
Günther Uecker teaches, lives and works in Düsseldorf.
