Little Shining Man

Heather and Ivan Morison make art as an active engagement with materials, histories, sites, and processes. Through peripatetic travels the Morisons have produced sculpture, photographs, buildings, fiction and are developing their own arboretum. The Morisons represented Wales at the 52nd Venice Biennale. Their new book Falling Into Place, a fictionalized account of their larger shelter works of the past few years, was published by Bookwooks in late 2009.

Little Shining Man is a sculpture that has the potential for flight. The design of the structure is based around the tetra kites of Alexander Graham Bell, multiplied out into colliding cubes that take their form from the cubic formations of the mineral Pyrite. A double wing module has been duplicated and arranged into a tight cellular structural arrangement that appears as a heavy, un-flyable mass. Utilising lightweight materials and the symmetry of the module and composition, it is able to fly freely and steadily.
The kite flown in the images is one section of an arrangement of three, that come together to create the final piece of sculpture that is taken own from display once a year to be flown in St. Aubin’s Bay.
There were several challenges in realising Little Shining Man. The structure had to be as strong and light as possible in order to fly, but had to return to earth with minimal damage so it could be installed as a piece of sculpture. Carbon fibre rod and Cuben fibre, a hand made composite fabric used primarily in racing yacht sails, achieved the perfect combination of strength and weight. The visual impact of the fabric produces an ethereal sense of depth and refraction that gives the heavy mass the lightest touch.
Queen & Crawford designed a joint system, the CKJ_01, a universal Nylon joint that would handle every connection in the composition. They work closely with 3TRPD in Newbury who are at the cutting edge of the Rapid Prototyping Industry. Printing the joints allows design, production, testing and refinement in a short time frame. The material is light and strong, perfect for this application.
More than 23,000 individual components make up the complete structure. Entirely assembled by hand; from design through to delivery more than 16 months of work.

Можно ли назвать эту композицию воздушным змеем? Пожалуй, да. Хотя её создатели скорее назовут её воздушной скульптурой. Но факт остаётся фактом, как ты этот куб, придуманный дизайнерами из студии Heather and Ivan Morison и изготовленный компанией Queen & Crawford, не назови, своей способности парить на ветру он не потеряет.
Куб совсем не напоминает пушинку. Он имеет внушительные размеры – необычная скульптура оказалась выше тех, кто её запускает в воздух.
Кажется, что этот объект слишком громоздкий для того, чтобы хоть на немного оторваться от земли.
Однако, продуманная конструкция, в основу которой легли лёгкие элементы из углеродного волокна и специальной ткани, позволяют доказать на практике, что скепсис по отношению к полёту куба не уместен.
Композиция была полностью собрана вручную более чем из 23.000 отдельных элементов. На это потребовалось более 16 месяцев.
Раз в году воздушную скульптуру планируется запускать на берегу залива Сент-Обин на острове Джерси, Великобритания.

Dass es sich bei der quadratischen Wabe hier um einen Drachen handelt, darauf kommt ein Uneingeweihter wohl kaum von selbst. Doch genau das ist die surreal anmutende Kreation “Three Cubes Collide” der britischen Designer Heather Peak und Ivan Morison in Zusammenarbeit mit Sash Reading sowie Queen and Crawford und so schwebt sie in ihrer Fragilität fast schwerelos durch die Lüfte – vorausgesetzt, der dreidimensionale Würfeldrachen ist dort erst einmal angelangt, denn wie das Video nach dem Jump zeigt, ist der Weg in diese Höhen nicht immer einfach.

Bereits der erste Blick lässt die komplexe Struktur erkennen: Aus 1.700 Segmenten wurde der Drachen zusammengesetzt, lässt sich dank des Bausteinprinzips jedoch beliebig erweitern oder verkleinern.

Ένα ζευγάρι Ουαλών χρησιμοποίησε ένα 3D εκτυπωτή για να δημιουργήσει ένα κύβο 2,5 μέτρων ο οποίος πετάει όπως και οι χαρταετοί.

Ο κύβος αποτελείται από 23.000 επιμέρους στοιχεία και το συνολικό του βάρους είναι τόσο ελαφρύ που μπορεί να διασχίσει τον ουρανό. Οι 2 καλλιτέχνες χρησιμοποίησαν ράβδους από ανθρακονήματα, ένα σύνθετο ύφασμα που χρησιμοποιείται κανονικά για τα πανιά των γιοτ και τις ειδικά σχεδιασμένες 3D νάιλον εκτυπώσεις.

Οι 2 καλλιτέχνες, Heather και Ivan Morison, είναι γνωστοί στην τέχνη εγκατάστασης κομματιών και συνδυάζουν φουτουριστικά υλικά και κατάλληλο σχεδιασμό, ώστε να δημιουργήσουν πλούσιο θέαμα. Ο κύβος περιλαμβάνει ελαφρά υλικά και τέτοια συμμετρία σύνθεσης, ώστε να είναι σε θέση να πετάξει ελεύθερα και σταθερά. Επιπλέον η δομή του είναι τόσο ισχυρή ώστε όταν προσκρούσει στο έδαφος, μετά από μια πτήση, να δεχθεί την ελάχιστη δυνατή ζημιά.
