“Surreal atmospheres, but also images from real life. The material shown at “Out of Fashion” for the International Film Festival in Rotterdam has been extremely varied. From the video-journal of French designer Agnès b. to the animation short film for the advertising campaign of Wonderwood by Comme de Garçon, to the much acclaimed Black Swan featuring costumes created by designer duo Rodarte. But not only.

Now in its 40th edition, the IFFR has showcased the creativity of fashion students and young designers that for the first time have investigated video as an expressive means of their fashion concept and – as the program’s curator Inge de Leuw underlines – “how fashion and film interact with each other.” Part of the Out of Fashion section – that from January 26th to February 6th has screened videos and feature films by, among others, Kenneth Anger, Quay Brothers, Hussein Chalayan, Maison Martin Margiela (who together with Agnès b. ha curated the beautiful exhibition and video-installation for the event) – the competition has received about 50 entries from Great Britain, Canada, South America and of course from Dutch schools such as the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Willem de Koning Academie.

The judging panel, composed of Margreeth Olsthoorn (owner of Rotterdam MghO and Mgh2O, now cult stores within the Rotterdam fashion scene), Rogier Vlaming (editor-in-chief of Glamcult, independent fashion and lifestyle magazine) and filmmaker Zach Gold who took part in the festival with the video String Theory produced by Belgian label A.F. Vandervorst, has selected 15 finalists and proclaimed one winner: the Eindhoven Design Academy student Niek Pulles and his innovative video Patch up pull over. Sponsor Eastpak has offered the beautiful bags created by designer Antoine Peters to all finalists and 500 Euros to be spent on the online shop for the first prize (that will have a dedicated article in Glamcult). ”
