JAAKKO PALLASVUO

Low Epic

source: startpointprizeeu

Jaakko Pallasvuo feels only contempt for what institutional art theory defines as the concept of the art world. His film Reverse Engineering, which he presented for his diploma thesis, is no exception. The film has a strong connection to the radical French essay film tradition represented by such directors as Chris Marker, Alain Resnais and Agnès Varda. Jaakko Pallasvuo openly allies himself with this tradition. The visual style of his film, however, is quite contemporary, closely related to the aesthetics of the internet Tumblr culture. His connection with the French tradition is mostly seen in his sharp critical discourse, analytical thinking, the use of non-linear narration, collage-like compositions and a sense of the absurd.
