A partir de phrases extraites d’articles de presse, Il crée un monde en alerte, menacé par des dangers non identifiés. Le spectateur qui essaye d’interpréter cette installation, voit chacune de ses pistes contrariée par une nouvelle information ou encore une pirouette humoristique. Cette déroute symbolise la confusion et la panique générale créées par la terreur médiatique. Parfois irrévérencieux, Jaap Scheeren dénonce le chaos des informations et sa manipulation à travers son humour dévastateur.

Jaap Scheeren (Nijmegen, The Netherlands, 1979) is a young artist who brings a fresh and broadening of scope to art photography. His carefree, calculated clumsy and humoristic approach to his work enhances the authentic and pure character of his series, without relinquishing the underlying seriousness or sincerity of his intentions.

Scheeren photographs reality as he wants it to be which does not mean that it cannot exist so.

Scheeren: ‘Did you know that ‘the left ear is more sensible to sweet talk than the right one’, that ‘on almost all Italian banknotes traces of cocaine can be detected’, that ‘a mountain in China has been painted green’, that ‘a man behind a barbecue feels more sexy’ and that ‘someone who sweats is less stressful than someone who doesn’t´?

When travelling through Slovakia where Scheeren made his project ‘3 Roses, 9 Ravens, 12 Months‘, he let himself be inspired by situations that would remind him of his own imagination when reading Slovak fairytales by Samuel Czambel and Pavel Dobšinský.

For his image of ‘Mother Nature’ from this series he was going along with his idea that he had described as follows: ‘Sometimes I truly feel I need to connect with nature; maybe even to become one with nature. I get so absorbed by this idea that my friends start to believe I will become Mother Nature. But I know I wouldn’t be a good mother.’

Graduated only in 2003 from the Academy St.Joost Academie in Breda, Scheeren collaborated with artist Anouk Kruithof on the project The Black Hole, for which they won the Unique Photography Prize. The series was exhibited at Foam. In 2007 Scheeren self published the photobook Oma Toos (Grandma Toos) and in 2008 3 Roses, 9 Ravens, 12 Months. He has exhibited his work widely including the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam; Fotofestival Naarden; W 139 and De Balie, Amsterdam; Villa Noailles, Hyères (Festival International de Mode et Photographie); Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney; 6th International Biennial of Photography and Visual Arts, Liège, Gallery Michalsky Dvor in Bratislava, Slovakia. Scheeren participated also in 2009 in the group show ‘Dutch Seen: New York Rediscovered’ in The Museum of the City of New York, curated by Kathy Ryan, Photo Editor of The New York Times Magazine. In 2009 his work was selected for the exhibition “Photography – in reverse _ Foam and again in 2011 in the exhibition Still / Life. In 2010 Scheeren was selected for the show Quickscan #1, at the Nederlands Fotomuseum.

Jaap Scheeren also works in commission for various magazines and publications, including nrc.next, FOAM magazine, Wallpaper, Kilimanjaro, Le Book and Picnic magazine.

Scheeren lives and works in Amsterdam. He has published three books, ‘The Black Hole’, 2006, ‘Oma Toos’, 2007 and ‘3 Roses, 9 Ravens, 12 Months’, 2008.
