Lee Materazzi’s photographs take everyday clutter and clumsiness to a whole new level. Her awkward pictures of people manipulated and crammed into everyday objects and spaces highlight our relationship with routine, mundanity and utter stupidity when dealing with everyday tasks whether it be cleaning, gardening, dressing or doing the laundry.
This concept of exploring the particular in order to talk about the whole is an idea, a notion, that many artists attempt to articulate but few do with such humour and absurdity as Materazzi does in these pictures – none of which are digitally manipulated or retouched. That’s right these pictures, that lie between photography, sculpture, performance art and comedy, are well thought out, exacting, precise, detailed, the subject carefully placed to maximise the strangeness, the bizarre element within the photograph. Here’s what Materazzi has to say about her work:
I find much significance in the small somewhat mundane details of life, a lot of the time the small things can be great metaphors for an understanding of the bigger picture. It is very easy for people to overlook routines within their life, as it is the big eventful moments that stand out more. I have never been one for the monumental but rather the simple and understated.

A gente conheceu o trabalho da fotógrafa Lee Materazzi e se apaixonou! A americana mostra como cenas banais do cotidiano podem ser mais importantes do que pensamos. E, a partir daí, criou uma série de fotos que representam o quanto as práticas e espaços do dia a dia (como tomar um café, vestir uma roupa ou sentar-se em uma cadeira), podem impactar no nosso emocional. La fotógrafa norteamericana Lee Materazzi manipula visualmente sucesos cotidianos para crear hilarantes situaciones inspiradas en cosas ordinarias. Materazzi investiga sobre el concepto de “encontrarse” en casa y pretende descubrir que los límites de una persona y los objetos de su hogar pueden llegar a confundirse. La artista dice que sus interacciones y luchas con dichos objetos son un intento de escapar de la conformidad. Explica, “me siento atraída por las asociaciones caóticas y disfuncionales que están albergadas dentro de las rutinas y el impacto psicológico que puedan tener en nuestro día a día.” Materazzi lleva diez años poniendo cuerpos en posiciones precarias e incómodas y como ejemplo, su serie Finding Myself at Home que produjo cuando se acababa de mudar a una nueva ciudad y estaba, literalmente, intentando encontrarse a sí misma en su nuevo hogar. En ésta, ella misma es la protagonista y reconoce: “Mis fotografías me permiten detener mi vida y cuestionarme los retos que tengo bajo la luz del humor”.

Lee Materazzi tiene un problema serio en la cabeza, o mejor diremos con las cabezas ¡Está totalmente obsesionada!

En su book te las puedes encontrar metidas en un cazo, llenas de mermelada, duchándose con detergente, envasadas al vacío, a punto de ser aspiradas… Pero, no contenta con eso, Lee decidió que podía integrar, no sólo su cabeza, sino ¡su cuerpo entero! con el resto de la casa. Se le ocurrió al mudarse de Londres (donde se formó) a Miami (donde trabaja). Dice que se sentía perdida y que estaba intentando encontrarse en la casa.
