Functionality Kills the Fun is a series of “broken” furniture that go by one principle: Functionality is overrated! Products become more interesting when they perform their task partly or even poorly. Most of the time the image or the emotional value that the object generates is what makes it so fascinating. In cases where the functionality is subject to the image you see that the pieces are more open for added value from the individual user. Playing with the limits of functionality leads to questioning yourself as a designer and as an owner. It’s important to create a strong relation between consumer and object where humor and image are equally as important as the function. Much more important then say, holding your books upright.

Belgian furniture designer Lennart van Uffelen has a passion for creating furniture that will stand out, both in its appearance and its construction. Looking at his Functionality Kills the Fun Collection, I think we can say that he succeeds. Van Uffelen’s collection is slightly unconventional in that the furniture is purposefully broken. The collection revolves around the idea that functionality is overrated. I’m not too sure whether that’s completely true, but we can’t deny the intrigue of van Uffelen’s “broken” furniture.

This furniture’s role as furniture is questionable. As the name of the collection explicitly says, it’s not functional: We can’t sit on the chair, sit books up straight on the bookshelf, use the drawers as they are meant to be used or look at our reflection clearly in the mirror. Nothing serves its purpose in the way it’s supposed to. However, van Uffelen’s nonfunctional furniture does serve as unique, striking accessories for the home.
