Aus der langerwarteten Kooperation zwischen dem legendären Lichtdesigner Michael Anastassiades und dem italienischen Leuchtenhersteller Flos entstanden 2 brandneue Produktlinien, die durch Schlichtheit, Einzigartigkeit und Charme bestechen. Nach ihrem Debüt in Europa kamen beide Kollektionen Design Hängeleuchten “String Lights” und “IC Lights” nach Nordamerika. Die neusten Ergänzungen zu der vielfältigen Produktepalette von Flos sind im FLOS Showroom im Stadtteil Soho in New York ausgestellt und derzeit in limitierten Editionen erhältlich.

Obwohl beide Lampenkollektionen bis jetzt nur ein paar Auftritte auf der Designszene weltweit hatten, wurden diese bereits mit dem ersten Preis des renommierten Wettbewerbs EDIDA 2014 in der Kategorie Beleuchtung ausgezeichnet. Ihr praktisches Design bietet jedoch mehr als eine einfache utilitäre Anwendung – das einzigartige Projektkonzept erlaubt eine fanrtasievolle individuelle Lichtgestaltung.

Inspiriert durch die Straßenlampen in den europäischen Städten- hängend oder stehend und durch die durch Gewicht gespannten Telegrafendrähte kreierte der zyprische Designer mit Sitz in London Michael Anastassiades die Leuchten der String Lights Kollektion. Die dünnen, schwarzen Stromkabel der kegel-und kugelförmigen Leuchten zeichnen geometrische Formen in der Luft.

String Lights Hängelampen strahlen ein weiches, diffuses Licht aus. Der Leuchtenkörper aus Alu-Druckguss ist in mattem Schwarz erhältlich und beinhaltet eine Led-Leuchtquelle und einen Diffusor zur Streuung der einfallenden Lichtstrahlung. 12 Meter langer Kevlarverstärkter Koaxial-Kabelanschluss zeichnet den Raum nach. Die Design Hängeleuchten lassen sich über eine Fernbedinung-Applikation über das Smartphone oder iPhone steuern.

Die IC Lampen bieten sich mit vermessingtem oder brüniertem Leuchtkörper aus Edelstahl, mundgeblasenem Glas und Diffusor. Sie stellen eine atemberaubende Synthese aus Form und Funktion dar. Ihre moderne Formensprache kreiert eine ausdrucksstarke Struktur, die den Raum mit Ästhetik, Individualität und optischer Spannung erfüllt

Michael Anastassiades launched his studio in 1994 to explore contemporary notions of culture and aesthetics through a combination of product, furniture and environmental design. Positioned between fine art and design, his work aims to provoke dialogue, participation and interaction. He creates objects that are minimal, utilitarian and almost mundane, yet full of vitality one might not expect. Anastassiades’ work is featured in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Craft Council in London, the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France, and the MAK in Vienna. His solo exhibitions include Time and Again at the Geymüllerschlössel/MAK in Vienna, To Be Perfectly Frank at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm, Norfolk House Music room at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Cyprus Presidency at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. One of the most recent exhibitions explores what Anastassiades calls the “contemporary anxieties of modern Cyprus” entitled Reload the Current Page at the Point Centre for Contemporary Art in Nicosia, Cyprus, and the collection General Illuminations, as part of the exhibition Doings on Time and Light at Rodeo Gallery, Istanbul.

He has designed products with various leading manufacturers including FLOS, Lobmeyr and Svenskt Tenn. In 2007 he set up the company Michael Anastassiades Ltd to produce his signature pieces; a collection of lighting, furniture, jewellery, and tabletop objects.

The studio’s philosophy is a continuous search for eclecticism, individuality, and timeless qualities in design. Michael Anastassiades trained as a civil engineer at London’s Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine before taking a masters degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art. Michael Anastassiades founded his London design studio in 1994.

Schooled in industrial design and engineering at London’s Royal College of Art and Imperial College – the Cypriot-born designer’s lighting, mirrors, and tabletop objects reside between industrial design, sculpture and decorative art. Deceptively simple, yet meticulously detailed, they betray his training as a civil engineer and industrial designer.

Anastassiades is particularly renowned for his lighting products, which comprise 80% of his studio’s commissions. Shiny surfaces combined with simple geometric shapes like tubes, oblongs and spheres, articulate architectural spaces. He often chooses reflective materials – such as mirrored glass and polished bronze – that appear to dematerialise his objects, to float independently, interacting with the space surrounding them.

Since collaborating with the architectural firm Studio Mumbai (2006), Anastassiades is increasingly working with some of the world’s leading architects – including David Chipperfield and John Pawson – and interior designers such as Studio Ilse. His lights can be seen in hotels, restaurants and stores worldwide – including the Grand Hotel Stockholm, Soho House New York and the Sergio Rossi boutiques worldwide.

Besides being commissioned and collected by private patrons and clients all over the world – Anastassiades has worked with many world renowned cutting-edge designers and prestigious manufacturers, including Hussein Chalayan (1997-8) Swarovski Crystal Palace (2004), Lobmeyer (2012) and Svenskt Tenn (2013). This year, he will be launching two ‘families’ of lights for Flos.

Featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France, and the V&A Museum and Crafts Council in London, his designs have also been showcased at world-renowned galleries and arts organisations including London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Design Museum, Somerset House and Sotheby’s; and Mitterand + Cramer in Geneva. Represented by the Nilufar Gallery in Milan – this follows the gallery’s commission to create the ‘Lit Lines’ series of lights (exhibited at Palazzo Durini in 2011) and the ‘Tree in the Moonlight’ lamp which formed part of their Unlimited Collection (2012) .

Other notable commissions include the Aghia Sophia Cathedral (2006) and more recently, a collaboration with MAK, Austria, on a six-month “intervention” with the museum’s 19th Geymullerschossel century building. “Time and Again” saw Anastassiades’ pared-down designs contrasting with the venue’s grand furnishings, taking the visitor on a journey back in time. The installation also involved launching his new 4-Phase Mirrors collection, produced in collaboration
with FIAM. His exhibited pieces now form part of MAK’s permanent collection (2012).

From an exhibition of his Mirror Chairs and Table at cult concept store, Colette in Paris (1998) Michael went on to sell his designs at the ‘design supermarket’ at Milan’s La Rinascente department store, New York’s Matter and Moss galleries and Liberty’s in London (2010). He currently sells through department stores Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Design Republic in Shanghai, and outlets such as Sigmar in London, Luminaire in Miami and Space in Australia.

With a mission to create objects of permanent value… in 2007 Michael set up a company under his own name to produce unlimited editions of his designs. Each product is handmade and stamped with the designers mark, manufactured in accordance with the purity of his original vision. A restrained vocabulary of forms may suggest he is a minimalist but his work is highly luxurious and sensuous because of the quality of his materials.

Anastassiades recently launched his own shop in London which provides the ideal platform to showcase and launch new products and collections. Housing the studio, shop and home in one building provides clients with a unique experience to view both new ideas and existing products within a domestic setting.

《電車に乗るたびに、高速で動いている電車の窓際に座って、連なった平行な電線が柱をつないでいる光景をいつも見ていました。ランダムな間隔の球形が、ワイヤーを介して景色を切り取るのを眺めるのが好きでした。また、それは地中海の文化において、あかりの列が村の広場で開かれる夜会のための屋外のスペースを選んだ時の柱の間に張り巡らされていた光景のようです。そして、私は家の中で、人間が日常的に生じる問題に対して創意的に取り組む姿に興味をそそられるのです。》

1967年生まれのロンドンを拠点に活躍するキプロス島出身のデザイナーMichael AnastassiadesのString Lightsは、天井や壁の電源を起点に、スペースの構造との関係を設定する黒いコードが、部屋の壁によって形成された線の一部となる。2つの異なる光源は、二等辺三角形と球形。2つのLEDランプが暖かい光を発しながら、テンションの張られたシステムが、スペースに立体感を与える。

ミニマルで詩的な、鉛筆の線で空中に描かれたようなString Lightsは、シンプルかつ大胆な概念である。 Anastassiadesは常に根本となるもの、素材や形状のオリジナルの本質を探索していた。
彼のデザインは、純粋で余計なものをそぎ落としていった作品が特徴である。«私の仕事は引き算の考えから湧き上がります。剥き出しの物体の本質は、美しさの表現を決定づけます。»彼の作品はシンプルで最高品質のクラフトマンシップを示し、作品に生命力を宿す。

Minimalista y poética como una línea dibujada por un lápiz en el aire, así es esta lámpara de suspensión que Michael Anastassiades ha diseñado para la firma de iluminación Flos. String Lights es un reflejo de la filosofía de trabajo del diseñador chipriota afincado en Londres que siempre busca la esencia tanto de la forma como de los materiales.

Sus viajes en tren, la cultura mediterránea y la practicidad han sido los factores básicos que le han inspirado a lo hora de crear la luminaria. Anastassiades explica que cuando viaja en tren le gusta “sentarse en la ventana y ver pasar los postes perfectamente alineados cada vez más rápido a medida que el tren va alcanzado más velocidad. Me encanta la forma en que dividen el paisaje y como, cada cierto intervalo, esferas de cableado se insertan en el conjunto.

También me encantan esos cables con luces que, en las culturas mediterráneas, suelen colgarse entre poste y poste de luz en plazas o zonas exteriores en fiestas o celebraciones. Y, por último, me gusta mucho ver como la ingenuidad humana soluciona problemas domésticos cotidianos, como interruptores o enchufes que alguien decidió instalar allí donde no se necesitan”.

Así es como el diseñador describe las cosas que inspiraron String Lights: un cable eléctrico negro que establece una relación con la arquitectura del espacio, pasando a formar parte de las líneas de las paredes de una estancia. Al final de este cableado, dos diferentes fuentes de luz: una con la forma de un triángulo isósceles y la otra, con la forma de una esfera. Ambos cuerpos están realizados en acero moldeado por presión, revestidos con una pintura Soft Touch transparente y un difusor óptico en policarbonato.

Un sistema de tensores sirve para dar forma a la ligera cuerda, mientras que las lámparas LED emiten una cálida luz. Y junto a la poesía de la forma, la funcionalidad que aportan las nuevas tecnologías: el interruptor es electrónico y está equipado con un mecanismo óptico. Además, también puede encenderse y apagarse, y regular la intensidad de la luz a través de una aplicación de control remoto vía Bluetooth para Android y Apple.

2014年のミラノサローネで発表されたFLOSの新作「String Lights」と「IC Lights」。デザイナーは、キプロス島生まれ、RCA出身でロンドンに自身のスタジオを構えるMichael Anastassiades（マイケル・アナスタシアデス）氏だ。新作の日本での初披露に合わせて東京のデザインウィーク期間中に来日した氏に、FLOS代表のPiero Gandini（ピエロ・ガンディーニ）氏と共にインタビューすることができた。FLOSとの出会い、自身のデザイン哲学等を、新製品と共に紹介しよう。

FLOSについて、多くは説明不要と思うので、概要のみを。1962年設立の住宅や建築照明を提供するイタリアの国際企業で、Achille Castiglioni（アッキレ・カスティリオーニ）を始めとしたデザイナーとの多くのコラボレーションで知られる。設立と同じ年に発表された、カスティリオーニ兄弟による「ARCO」は、50年以上を経た今なお照明デザインのアイコンとなっている。Jasper Morrison（ジャスパー・モリソン）、Marc Newson（マーク・ニューソン）、Marcel Wanders（マルセル・ワンダース）、Patricia Urquiola（パトリシア・ウルキオラ）、Philippe Starck（フィリップ・スタルク）、Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec（ロナン＆エルワン ブルレック）等との共同は、日本でも良く知られるところだ。
Michael Anastassiades氏については、多少の説明が必要だろう。1967年キプロス島生まれ、ロンドンのカレッジで土木技術を学んだ後、RCA（ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート）で工業デザインを学び、1994年にロンドンに自身のスタジオを設立した。
そのデザインは、ニューヨーク近代美術館、V&A博物館などのパーマネントコレクションに選定されている。2006年の建築事務所スタジオ・ムンバイとの共同以来、David Chipperfield（デビッド・チッパーフィールド）等の建築家との共同や、セルジオ・ロッシのブティックやスワロフスキーのインスタレーションなど仕事の領域を拡げている。
そのデザインは、円柱、直方体、球、といったミニマルな要素を用いているので、一見したところでは当たり前に見えてしまうかもしれない。だが、機能的であることはもちろんのこと、慎重に見ると予期していなかった魅力に気づくのではないだろうか。

まず、両者の出会いについてPiero Gandini氏に尋ねた。
「3年前、2011年ことです。ニューヨークのギャラリーで非常に美しいシャンデリアを見ました。『これは誰のデザインだ？』と名前を聞いたのですが、発音が難しくて、実は覚えることができませんでした（笑）。後日、知人に名前を思い出す手伝いをしてもらう中で、パトリシア・ウルキオラが『私の友達よ！』と教えてくれたのです」
その数週間後、ロンドンで再会し、時間が無かった二人はタクシーの中で一緒に仕事をすることを決めたという。「素敵なドローイング、きれいなラインはとても忘れられないものでした。プレゼンテーションの能力も素晴らしく、全てが私を感動させたんです」
「シンデレラストーリーに聞こえますね」と聞いた。
「シンデレラストーリーではないと断言します。マイク※は非凡です。そしてその表現は首尾一貫している。とてもラッキーなタイミングで出会うことにはなりましたが、彼がセルフプロダクトで展示するチャレンジをしていたからです」

FLOSとの共同をどう感じたかMichael Anastassiades氏に聞いた。
「驚くほど良いものです。素晴らしいサポート、リレーションシップ、そして信頼。美しさを製品にすることに妥協がありません。美しくダイナミックな関係を築けていると思います」
「デザイナーはコミュニケートする義務があると考えています。コミュニケーションがなければ、自分のデザインは存在しない。そうしたデザイナー側の姿勢は非常に重要だと思います」
新作の名前について。
普段乗っている電車の窓から見える規則的に並ぶ電線からインスピレーションを得た「String Lights」は良く分かるのだが、「IC Lights」の名前はIdentification Code（英国の移民者出身国を分類する入国管理局の識別コード）に由来するという、その理由が分からなく尋ねた。
「直接の関係はないです笑。名前がデザインを定義してしまうことを好まないのです。IC Lightsには色々な形があるので、様々な出身国を表すICとも言えますが、記号化して間接的に人を表現するICということかもしれません」
「IC Lights」は、ジャグリングの名手の体とボールの動きにインスピレーションを得たデザインだ。
発想の根源については「人生の全てが反映している。好きなもの、見えるもの全て。そして、人間関係。人間の観察ですね」という。
続けて、とてもシンプルだが非常にリッチなイメージを新作から感じたので、日本のデザインの影響や自身のデザイン哲学について聞いた。
「昨晩のパーティでも同じことを聞かれました。RCAを卒業した後、インターンとして日本に3ヵ月滞在したことがあります。日本の魅力的な文化、建築、美しい物に惹かれていたのです。23年経って、戻ってきましたが、いまだに非常に特別な場所です。私のデザインについて言えば、形態の純粋さを探し求めています。シンプルさを極めて、時代を越えて共通する魅力を抽出したい」
「何年代風とか、何かを参照したようなものではなく、タイムレスなデザインを、時代を越えて残るようなデザインを志向しています」

L’inverno è alle porte. Perché non illuminare la casa con una lampada di design d’atmosfera? Se questo è uno dei vostri desideri, vi consigliamo uno dei modelli della collezione IC Lights progettata dall’anglo-cipriota Michael Anastassiades per il brand italiano Flos.
L’intera linea è un mix di aneddoti, forme equilibrate e ironia. Anastassiades racconta che il punto di partenza è stato sancito da un video visto online. “Mi sono imbattuto in un filmato di un cosiddetto contact juggler. Un giocoliere faceva girare un set di sfere di vetro, spostandole attorno al braccio e sulla punta delle dita. E mentre io ero affascinato dalla sua abilità, all’improvviso le sfere si sono fermate, perfettamente immobili. Volevo catturare quel preciso istante. È stato quello il momento eureka!”, ha raccontato il progettista.
L’intera collezione esplora l’equilibrio. Declinata nelle versioni, da tavolo, da parete, sospensione e plafoniere, IC Lights si basa sul principio di una sfera perfettamente in equilibrio sulla punta di un’asta in acciaio ottonato con dettagli nello stesso metallo bronzato. Cos’altro? Oltre al diffusore opalino in vetro soffiato, la luce vanta un comodo dimmer sul cavo di alimentazione.
Infine, come dimenticare! Un tocco di ironia per la scelta del nome: le iniziali IC provengono dai codici che la polizia britannica utilizza, nel fare rapporto alla propria centrale, per segnalare la presunta etnia di un individuo fermato per strada. Dunque, se IC1 significa bianco o nord europeo, IC2 sta per europeo mediterraneo/ispanico, mentre IC3 indica una persona africana o afro-caraibica e così via. È un modo divertente, e di certo bizzarro, per alludere alle diverse forme dei modelli che compongono questa novità Flos. Designer pieno di risorse questo Anastassiades!
