Global Bearing questions our “feeling of reality” as the artist attempts to challenge our perception of the “ground beneath our feet”, which we usually consider to be a flat plane. The installation enables us to explore “Earth” through an interface combining a concave screen with a vector which we operate ourselves: by moving a positioning device in the horizontal and vertical planes, similar to a gyrocompass, we seem to travel across the globe. Suddenly we must regain our bearings as we experience the Earth as a sphere. Through an accelerated level of interaction and a sensory experience, the spectator is “thrown into the void of outer space”.

A graduate of the Information Design Department of Japan’s Tama Art University, Norimichi Hirakawa reconstructs universal and other phenomena on a sensory level in the form of installations. His work entails not only device or algorithm design which enables analogue input for digital systems, but also AV programming and spatial design. For his installation Global Bearing he received the Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2004.
