Work: Onion Skin is a new immersive installation by Olivier Ratsi, an artist on the ANTIVJ visual label. The first stage in the Echolyse project, which will give birth to several variations around the same concept, Onion Skin is made up of a physical dimension – a module of two walls, positioned at right angles – augmented by a projection and a 5.1 sound broadcast. Onion Skin is a graphical work about the re-composition of time and space through a game of perspectives, both of the exhibition space itself and that of the projection canvas. Built around a progressive structure, made up of 4 parts lasting 14 minutes in total, the piece plays on the principle of repetition and scale to create a physical and hypnotic experience that opens doors onto the hidden and untouchable. The whole experience of the installation is based on a very specific point of view. A precise position from which a new dimension is revealed to the audience by anamorphosis. The simple geometric elements (“peelings”) that seemed to be flat at first suddenly start delimiting a new space. The illusion of a new dimension within the installation slowly appears as the onion skins seem to be leaving their physical surface behind. A 5.1 surround sound set-up accentuates the physical dimension of the installation, strengthening and playing with the impression of volume and space.

Travaille et vit à Paris.
Principalement basé sur l’expérience de la réalité et les représentations de la perception de l’espace, Olivier Ratsi considère la réalité objective, le temps, l’espace et la matière comme des notions d’information intangibles.
Son travail consiste à concevoir des processus de discontinuité avec ces notions afin de pouvoir partager avec le spectateur un autre point de vue.
Par le biais de ce processus, Ratsi crée une cassure dans cette réalité objective, altérant notre perception du réel.
Toutefois cette cassure significative et perturbante est assez modérée afin de ne pas priver le spectateur de sa capacité subjective de reconstruction/reconstitution de la réalité, via son expérience et sa propre culture.Le processus de création basé sur la déconstruction des repères spatio-temporels et les dispositifs utilisant la technique de l’anamorphose, développée au cours de ses recherches, jouent principalement le rôle de déclencheurs d’émotions, qui n’ont pas seulement pour but de montrer ce que peuvent être les choses autrement, mais plutôt de questionner leurs références.
Son travail a été présenté dans le New York Times Magazine pour lequel il a réalisé un travail de commande, ainsi que dans des festivals d’arts numériques tels qu’Elektra et Mutek au Canada, en Suisse au Mapping Festival, en Corée, au festival Croisement en Chine, au Mexique et en France à Vidéoformes, Némo, Scopitone et Bains Numériques…
Olivier Ratsi a cofondé ANTIVJ en 2007, un « label visuel » spécialisé dans les projections audiovisuelles, les performances architecturales et les installations lumineuses.

Olivier Ratsi is a visual artist. His work is mainly based upon representations of space’s perception and the experience of reality.
He developed a creative process based on the deconstruction of space and time. The deconstruction or fragmentation acts mainly as an emotion trigger, which does not aim at showing what things could be, but more at questioning their references.
Its aim is to generate a break with the meaning of the original items, to propose a new viewing angle and to provide the public a new field of experience, another way of looking at space and time.
His works take shape through different artistic fields: photography, digital painting, video, installation volume and performance, which enable to present a creative process each time in different ways.
Olivier Ratsi co-founded “AntiVJ” in 2007, a “visual label” specialized in audiovisual projections, architectural performances and light installations.

My work essentially revolves around representations of the perception of the world and the experience of reality through static and animated pictures.
My creation process is based on the deconstruction of spatiotemporal landmarks. The objective is to generate a rupture with the signification of the original elements, suggesting a new point of view and providing the audience with a new experience, another conception of space and time.
My artist’s work is shaped through various media: photography, digital painting, video, three-dimensional installations and vjing. 
I’m also part of the visual label AntiVJ whose main field of research is the influence of light on our perception of space through the use of video-projected light onto three-dimensional installations.
