Wire Heels

Work: In the early 90s Polly Verity trained herself in 3D computer modelling. This involved a process whereby a virtual 3D wireframe is used as the basis for the 3D models. Polly now uses wireframe in the same way but in real-life and she finds manipulating materials in a hands-on way is refreshing. “You have to be observant all the time, each line is just as important as another. Like computer lines, the wire is relatively easy to “undo” if I get something is not quite working.” She obtains her inspiration from the spirit of the thing that she is making. Early 80s computer graphics are influences such as Steven Lisberger’s movie Tron and David Braben and Ian Bell’s 3D wireframe game Elite. Very simple visual information is all that is needed so the line is pared down to the essentials. In the early 80s it was essential to get the code as tight as possible to save precious memory and Polly works with that aesthetic. The structure is cold formed in wire and built up to describe the external contours like a delicate exoskeleton.

(Polly Verity).

Artist Polly Verity creates exquisite wire sculptures covered with tissue paper, polypropylene or fiberglass. Her pieces range from a life-size fiberglass cow mounted to the side of a building in Edinburgh to delicate wire and tissue paper creatures just 4-5 inches tall.
