Susan Clusener, graduate of ceramic art, lives and works in California. Her work is outstanding!
Her inspiration is from nature and her creations is ecological. In clay Susan discovered a different pace and loved the different sense of time experienced in her constructions.
Her stone flower pots, after manufacturing and smoothing them, can provide sheltering to natural world. Even empty, they can remind us of life with their simplicity and their ecological material. As she says: “…I do not copy the beauty of nature, but I respond to it.” The series Seed Pod mimics sea urchins and chestnuts, creating decorative from clay and matches. She is thrilled with the movement of nature, the feel of it on the skin and the invisible force that has to be reborn. That’s what she would like to reflect in her works. Susan Clusener created fruit in human size in order to sensitize people about beauty, youth and the ephemeral of life.

I don’t know if it was the oversized fruit, the prickly seed pods, her ability to make objects into environments or the artist’s own words that made me squeal with delight – perhaps it was the correct combination of all of these.

Susan Clusener’s ceramic sculptures appeal to my love of hiding spots, escape routes, stories, nooks and crannies. Enjoy…

“I am fascinated by the physical-ness of things: how a flame moves, how trees bend, how water feels on the skin. I am especially fascinated by the invisible forces at work in living things. In particular, those forces associated with growth and renewal, but also its other side, death and decay.” Susan Clusener

“I believe an awareness of the unconscious and conscious processes of living and its eventual and unknowable end can make life more beautiful. The beauty of the ephemeral. . . a flutter, a burble, a touch; this beauty is what I am trying to evoke with my artwork.” Susan Clusener

“In working with clay, wood, metal, and fire, I enjoy the interaction with our natural world’s mystery and wonder. A more fulfilling experience, in my mind, than would result from attempting to only mirror nature’s beauty.” Susan Clusener
