Dynamic Structure 101110

Work: Dynamic Structure 101110 consist of 16 red corner shaped elements and 16 black lines that in front of a white background on eight points can rotate independently from each other. On each rotation point in total 4 axes are mounted. The elements can rotate with stepless speed in two directions, or stand still. An integrated computer system with specially developed software coordinates the movement process. Constantly changing structures that move between chaos and order are formed. There is no fixed repetitive cycle.

Willem van Weeghel was born in 1956 in Wageningen, Holland. Movement is the central means of expression in his work. The changing structures that appear move in the transitional area between chaos and order, between variability and uniformity, between volatility and consistency. As a reconciliation of opposites.

In mijn werk staat beweging als beeldend middel centraal. De veranderende structuren die ontstaan bewegen zich in de overgangsgebieden tussen chaos en orde, tussen grilligheid en wetmatigheid, tussen veranderlijkheid en rust. Als een verzoening van tegenpolen.

Mijn kinetische objecten kenmerken zich door een serieel gebruik van beeldelementen waarvan de vorm doorgaans ondergeschikt is aan de beweging die zij uitvoeren. Identieke elementen met identieke bewegingsmogelijkheden vormen tezamen voortdurend veranderende structuren. Als dansers in een complexe choreografie. De vormen die ik gebruik fungeren hierbij alleen als middel om de beweging zichtbaar te maken en zijn daarom zo eenvoudig mogelijk. Complexiteit ontstaat door het samen bewegen.

Meestal worden de objecten door een, voor de toeschouwer niet zichtbaar, geïntegreerd computersysteem bestuurd. Ik maak gebruik van geavanceerde techniek, maar deze is niet als zodanig zichtbaar en dient alleen als middel.

Middel in een poging om de voortdurende beweging waarin structuren ontstaan en weer verdwijnen te bevatten en zo de verstrijkende tijd zichtbaar te maken.

My kinetic objects are characterised by a serial use of elements of which the form is generally of less importance than the movement that they make. Identical elements with identical movement options together form constantly changing structures. Like dancers executing a complex choreography. The forms that I use only function as the instruments to make the movement visible and, therefore, these are as simple as possible. The coordinated movement creates complexity.

The movements of the objects are usually controlled by an integrated computer system, which is not visible for the spectator. I use advanced and sophisticated technology, but this is not visible and it is only instrumental. Instrumental in an attempt to comprehend the constant movement in which structures appear and then disappear again. In an attempt to visualize the passage of time…
