Alejandro Almanza Pereda (b. 1977, Mexico City, Mexico) lives and works between Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York and Mexico City, Mexico. He earned a BFA from University of Texas at El Paso (2005), attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2004), and is an MFA candidate at Hunter College of The City University of New York (2015). He has been a resident at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha (2011), while his awards and honors include grants from the Harpo Foundation (2010), Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (2008), and the National Fund for the Arts and Culture (FONCA) Programa Jovenes Creadores Mexico City (2005, 2007). Installation artist and sculptor Alejandro Almanza Pereda strips objects of their original meaning, rearranging them into clean, geometric structures. Almanza Pereda uses a wide range of both utilitarian and rare fine art objects — his artwork Strip the Rod and Spoil the Child (pictured above) contains bowling balls, lamps and books as well as 17th-century Chinese pottery and a 20th-century Iranian wool rug. But rather than creating chaos from these disparate materials, Almanza Pereda creates sleek designs that function as visual puzzles of sorts. Take a look at some images of his artwork below.

González y González se complace en presentar “Fruto de una infinidad de circunstancias imposibles de determinar” primera muestra individual del artista mexicano residente en Nueva York Alejandro Almanza Pereda. La muestra permanecerá abierta desde el 16 de Junio al 28 de Julio 2013.
La muestra se compone de nuevos trabajos de collages y escultura. La base éstos se encuentra en el concepto y práctica del coleccionismo. Almanza Pereda creo obras precarias y efímeras a partir de objetos encontrados, así como de elementos que busca en ferias de pulgas y mercados de anticuarios. Con estos objetos el artista crea relaciones temporales y espaciales en los que la noción de equilibrio y obsolescencia se entrelazan para hablarnos de fragilidad y azar. En palabras del autor:
“EL ser humano se relaciona con objetos toda su vida. Cada objeto tiene connotaciones de valor, materialidad, temporalidad y también de afecto.?Al tratar de hacer un diagrama inexplicable, las piezas se convierten en una composición de elementos en donde cada uno es crucial para el equilibrio de la estructura, al quitar uno, el sistema de fuerzas se colapsaría. La piezas son una alegoría al hogar el cual al ser despojado de elementos personales se convierte en un contenedor vacío. Nuestras colecciones privadas prevalecerán a nosotros, pero se desintegraran debido a la falta de lo lazos que hacemos y se transformaran en otras colecciones de otros”.

Alejandro Almanza Pereda was born in Mexico City and received his B.A. from the University of Texas at El Paso. His work has appeared in exhibitions at Art in General in New York and the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, and in group exhibitions at El Museo del Barrio, The Queens Museum of Art, and the Soap Factory in Minneapolis.
He currently lives and works in New York.
