FABIAN OEFNER

Swiss photographer and artist Fabian Oefner’s passion is to recreate natural phenomena and capture them in a way that is visually impactful. For his series titled Black Hole, he poured acrylic paint over a metal rod that was attached to an electric drill; once the drill was powered on, the paint started to move away from the rod, and it is this action that Oefner captures in his images.

The pictures were taken only milliseconds after the drill was powered on. To get such precise timing, Oefner used sensors that he attached to the drills, which sent out an impulse to the flashes. Oefner was able to capture pictures within as little as 1/40000 of a second, completely halting time and the paint. Oefner states in his website that he is aiming to “present the unseen and poetic facets of our natural world and to invite us to stop for a moment and appreciate the magic that constantly surrounds us.” Viewing the awe-inspiring pictures he’s captured, we’ll go ahead and say he’s doing a fantastic job of doing just that so far.

“Black Hole” is a series of images, which shows paint modeled by centripetal force. The setup is very simple: Various shades of acrylic paint are dripped onto a metallic rod, which is connected to a drill. When switched on, the paint starts to move away from the rod, creating these amazing looking structures.

The motion of the paint happens in a blink of an eye, the images you see are taken only millisecond after the drill was turned on. To capture the moment, where the paint forms that distinctive shape, I connected a sensor to the drill, which sends an impulse to the flashes. These specialized units are capable of creating flashes as short as a 1/40000 of a second, freezing the motion of the paint.
