Fritz Panzer

Fritz Panzer (Judenburg, 1945) is a Wien-based artist. All throughout his career, Fritz Panzer has followed the same approach in his works with different media. In the 70s Fritz Panzer has started creating sculptures that were replicas of furniture and objects on a scale of one to one. His work offers an interesting experience that asks the viewer to rely on their own memory and recognition to complete the works, referring to outline drawings and to gestural drawings creating the volume of an object through his total silhouette. New spaces come into being, in which the artist makes an escalator, stepladder or desk grow out of the world and likewise into it, holding them poised between visibility and invisibility. Panzer gives us the lines and our minds will create volume by presenting his wire works, including the “Pianino” (2010), as well as several drawings and paintings. In the words of Sarah Heigl (“The Walk in Drawing”): “We have two objects in front of us, which do not complete nor exclude each other, who are no more or not yet the Other (Roland Barthes). (…)
By the extension of the drawing into three dimensions, the creation of the ‘walk-in drawing’, our impression is reinforced to be dealing with objects dwelling an intermediate world.”
During his rich and high-profile carreer he participated at groups shows in renowned museums and institutions such as, among the most recent, “House Trip”, Art Forum Berlin, Germany (2007); “Neon, Who’s afraid of red, yellow and blue?”, La Maison Rouge – Fondation Antoine de Galbert, Paris (2012); “Neon, La materia luminosa dell’arte”, Museo D’Arte Contemporanea Rome, Italy (2012) and his works were exhibited at the ABC Fair, Berlin in 2013. Remarkably in the last few years, he presented Solo shows “Doppelganger”, Kunsthaus Murzzuschlag, Muerz, Austria in 2008, “Fritz Panzer”, Galerie Krobath, Berlin, Germany (2012) and “Doubles”, Galerie Alberta Pane, Paris, France in 2012. Recently, the artist has been also awarded with Preis Der Stadt Wien 2014 and will take part to a group show for Secession, Vienna, Kunstler und Dichter, curated by Ugo Rondinone.

austrian artist fritz panzer will be showing his one to one scale wire sculptures in an exhibition entitled ‘doubles’ at the alberta pane gallery in paris. the work references gestural contour drawings, creating the volume of an object through a gossamer-like outline that seems to gradually dissipate. the series offers an almost ethereal experience, requesting the viewer to rely partly on memory and recognition to complete their own understanding of the work.
