Leyre Valiente’s S/S 2013 COLLECTIONis inspired by an imaginary creature called Chimera or Chimaera (Greek: Χίμαιρα Chímaira). Chimaera was, according to Greek mythology, a monstrous fire-breathing female creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of three animals — a lion, a snake and a goat. Usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat arising from its back, and a tail that ended in a snake’s head, the Chimera was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of such monsters as Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra.
The designer seeks to take us on a fictional and metaphorical journey from fetus to Chimaera. From pure and innocent to the perplexing yet alluring ”monster” we become as we enter adulthood. Like a worm builds its cocoon, where it grows and evolves to a fine butterfly, protected by the external threats of the environment, so does Chimeara; by withdrawing into a shell where it gradually builds its existence. Like the human embryo undergoes the various stages of evolution from an invertebrate being to a perfect and functional skeleton, so does Chimaera. All the previous led the Spanish designer to create a series of dresses with elements that refer to both the human and animal bone structure, veins, insect wings and cocoons, so modern and fresh; totally out of the ordinary, meant to make a strong visual impact!
