Special Collection – α Lyrae
VEGA ZAISHI WANG + UFO Media Lab (ft. Zhang ShouWang)
“Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe, the more often and the more intensely the mind of is drawn to them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.”
— Immunel Kant
VEGA ZAISHI WANG in collaboration with Hangzhou-based UFO Media Lab bring us an epic inter-galactic fashion show. Commissioned by The Creators Project, this special collection from VEGA ZAISHI WANG applies the newest development of Electro Luminescent (EL) fabric, adding pattern of organism and geometric shapes to present the universe in an unexpected way.
Housing these delicate, luminescence garnets is a 3D generative environment designed and viturally contructed by China’s leading new media artist collective, UFO Media Lab, creating a stationary space that moves and grows at different perspective to the viewer eyes. Ambiant music is composed by leading experimental electronic musician, Zhang Shouwang, to catapult the exhibition to another spiritual dimension.

Wu Juehui and Shao Ding head up UFO Media Lab and “virtual lab” MeatMedia–two companies that work with artists and technologists to explore the social applications of technology through experimental and R&D projects.

Both Juehui and Ding have a theatre background, and they incorporate some of the tricks they learnt from that trade in their installations, building on their theatrical foundation to create works that filter the experience of technology through performance, spectacle, and architectural forms.

Beijing-based designer Vega Zaishi Wang uses electroluminescent fabrics in her latest luminous fashion collection, titled Alpha Lyrae. Drawing inspiration from astrological constellations, Wang collaborated with China’s leading multimedia art collective UFO Media Lab to create an immersive 3D environment that showed the illuminated dresses floating in a projection-mapped universe of organic patterns and shapes.

The installation was recently showcased at Beijing’s Ullens Center for Contemporary Art as part of The Creators Project, a global platform launched by American chipmaker Intel and New York-based Canadian media brand Vice. The room pulsed to ambient music composed by Chinese electronic musician Zhang Shou Wang.

Alpha Lyrae is an evolution from Wang’s glowing thesis collection called Into The Deep, inspired by bioluminescent jellyfish. Wang graduated from London’s Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in 2008.
