Amethyst
Amethyst initially was created as a site-specific installation with images and sound. Slowly dissolving slides reminisce the process of decay. The automated slideshow is projected in a dimly lit but richly decorated room, the visual style of the imagery referring to fashion photography. I created this work on the occasion of Salon/1, by whom I was invited to show my work in Museum van Loon during the Amsterdam Fashion Week 2010.

The result is a collection of individual portraits, striking and captivating in their charm. Diop carefully chooses backgrounds and patterns to strengthen the subject’s personality and cultural references. Therefore, the colour of kenté fabric flawlessly matches the outfit of casually posing fashion designer, Selly Raby Kane. The clothes of artist Mame-Diarra Niang and model Aminata Faye fuse with an African background pattern. Using this particular approach, Diop becomes part of a tradition of African studio photography epitomized by the likes of Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta. He honours their pioneering work in his own creations, making use of contemporary techniques. Instead of merely creating striking images of an attractive young generation, Diop defines the images during the portraiture process, ensuring that decisions regarding pose, background and props are taken together with the subject. This makes it possible for Diop to come closer to the essence of the portrayed individual, and therefore do justice to the multiplicity and energy of Dakar’s contemporary cultural scene.
Elene usdin is a paris based artist who works primarily in photography. she is part of the creative collective heartland villa that also includes art directors lionel avignon and stefan de vivies. usdin’s work is very diverse and includes work for commercial clients, fashion publications and herself. many of her pieces are seemingly candid often featuring the artist herself as the subject. she also integrates lots of props and masks into her works giving them a surreal touch.

A native of the Netherlands, Viviane Sassen spent three of her formative childhood years in Kenya, returning frequently during her teen years and beyond. Sassen’s recent work explores her relationship to Africa and to the world of dreams and waking. As a fashion photographer she has worked for clients like Surface2air (Paris), Louis Vuitton and Adidas, though her fine art photography has recently been winning acclaim worldwide. Her work is both beautiful and unsettling, a feast of color and composition.
Corriette Schoenaerts is a photographer working in an art, fashion and commercial context. Corriette chooses not to work in one signature style. Instead she allows herself the freedom to focus on the subject, figuring formal congruencies will naturally follow. Wentworth’s sculpture takes as its subject the semantics of the everyday world, taking readymade and frequently incongruous objects and arranging them in a fashion that forces us to recognise the drama inherent in that which we too easily dismiss as routine. His photography captures the unusual or counter-intuitive behaviour of things, treating the (generally urban) landscape as consisting of readymade works that merit the same attention as more traditional art objects.
Multidisciplinary in his practice, Markus Schinwald alternately uses painting, video, photography, installation, performance, theater, dance and even the art of the puppeteer. From his training as a fashion designer, the artist has retained a keen interest in the human body, exploring its capabilities and limitations, both physically and psychologically.
Freudenthal/Verhagen are a Dutch photography duo based in Amsterdam. Carmen Freudenthal & Elle Verhagen met right after graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (university of applied sciences for Fine Arts and Design) were Carmen studied photography and Elle studied fashion design. There was a immediate recognition of a mutual taste in image making and what fashion imagery should look like.
Koen Hauser is known for his intangible body of work flowing between fine arts, fashion and applied photography. Always looking for innovative ways of applying different visual styles and techniques both old and new, Hauser creates strong images that are contemporary and timeless, elegant and alienating.
Animal Works
In his interdisciplinary work, encompassing video, performance, dance, theatre, painting, photography, installation, and even puppetry, Markus Schinwald creates mysterious and unsettling atmospheres that hint at their Viennese production context, through references to austere Biedermeier style or to psychoanalysis. His seminal studies in fashion left him with a wide interest in clothing and, furthermore, in the human body’s potential and limitations in both physical and psychological senses.

Secrets Trilogy
Secret Machine
Secret Machine is the second of the Secrets Trilogy; a cycle exploring the imperceptible conditions that frame life and is preceded by Secret Life (2008) and followed by Six Easy Pieces (2010)
In Secret Machine a woman is subjected to Muybridge’s motion studies. She is treated in the same fashion as in the original Muybridge photography: with Greek aesthetic in a Cartesian grid. A short time after Mybridge’s studies, Duchamp painted Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) attempting to show time on a flat surface. He is expanding cubism and painting into another dimension: time. Time is about movement and change, like our experience of reality. Without change life does not exist. Photography does not capture this experience. In Secret Machine different filming techniques are compared to the motion of the body. The film camera becomes another measurement tool in a way a video camera cannot. The intention was to make an art piece from the point of view of a machine, specifically a camera.
