Erwin Wurm, one of Austria’s most important and internationally famous sculptors, has been preoccupied with expanding the concept of sculpture since the 1980s. Wurm is primarily a sculptor, and traditional sculptural concerns such as the relationship between object and pedestal, the function of gravity, the fixing of form, and the manipulation of volume, play through all his work.

Increasing, remodeling or removing volume, the habitual interests of many sculptors, are given a new twist in Wurm’s work. Volume and adding volume are treated as sociocrital issues. In 1993, Erwin Wurm wrote an instructional book on how to gain two clothing sizes in eight days. Eight years later, he made his first Fat Car by plumping up an existing car with styrofoam and fiberglass, which resulted in a pitiful, chubby version of the original sportsy model. By taking the question of obesity, Wurm probes the link between power, wealth and body weight. He also wants to offer a sharp criticism of our current value system, as the advertising world demands us to stay thin but to consume more and more.

Erwin Wurm is an Austrian sculptor and photographer born in Bruck an der Mur in 1954 who lives and works in Vienna. Trained at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna between 1979 and 1982.
In his work appear in both the artist himself, as other people working with him in absurd statuesque poses, in most cases with the use of everyday objects. Its images are not simply the documentation of a performance. With this procedure is to constantly review the concept of sculpture in two respects: first, relocating to humanize objects and, secondly, objectified the human body.

Incongruous and unusual revolve around the work of Erwin Wurm (Bruck, 1954) and the viewer is torn between bewilderment and laughter. Function objects change and people change their meaning. Up is down and down is lateral. Perceptions are tested and created a parallel world where the artist questions resemble those of the philosopher where to find us, about us, why the world? Despite the questions, honestly confesses Wurm: “Every time has its own truth. That’s what artists and philosophers seek. However, both fail constantly. ”
At the age of 15 he knew he wanted to be an artist. His father worked as a detective in the police and their vision of the artists was more than suspicious. The fact that his son was like to be a taboo. ”My father loved everyone, even people he put behind bars. They send her little sculptures of towers or churches made with matches or cigarettes. He had a collection of miniesculturas. Maybe that made me want to be an artist “.
Sculpture is precisely the act that has been at the center of their concerns. Try, for example, volume, weight, balance and the way out of a podium, as in his sculpture than a minute, where the audience is instructed to produce for a given time: “Open your pants and put a bunch of flowers “,” Get into the nose two pencils and a stapler in the mouth “are some of the instructions to follow, and thus interact with the artist’s idea. The video and photography realize these episodes ephemeral. The concept of sculpture in Wurm’s work crosses borders and mixed with action to create powerful images that have a direct impact.
His work has appeared in the international art scene representative and belongs to the most important artists of the present.
The sample memory in the era of globalization: Perspectives from the look from the outside, curated by Sarolta Schredl, includes works by 20 years of artistic work of Erwin Wurm and is presented in the context of 200 years of Independence by Austria Embassy in Bogota in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and international affairs.

Erwin Wurm (born 1954) is an Austrian artist born in Bruck an der Mur / Styria. He currently lives and works in Vienna and Limburg, Austria.

Since the late 1980s he has developed an ongoing series of “One Minute Sculptures,” in which he poses himself or his models in unexpected relationships with everyday objects close at hand, prompting the viewer to question the very definition of sculpture. He seeks to use the “shortest path” in creating a sculpture—a clear and fast, sometimes humorous, form of expression. As the sculptures are fleeting and meant to be spontaneous and temporary, the images are only captured in photos or on film.

In The artist who swallowed the world (Hatje Cantz) Wurm is quoted as saying: “I am interested in the everyday life. All the materials that surrounded me could be useful, as well as the objects, topics involved in contemporary society. My work speaks about the whole entity of a human being: the physical, the spiritual, the psychological and the political.”

Erwin Wurm is known for his humorous approach to formalism. About the use of humor in his work, Wurm says in an interview: “If you approach things with a sense of humor, people immediately assume you’re not to be taken seriously. But I think truths about society and human existence can be approached in different ways. You don’t always have to be deadly serious. Sarcasm and humor can help you see things in a lighter vein.”

He is mentioned in the Red Hot Chili Peppers music video Can’t Stop, in which a sign states that his art was an inspiration for the video. In a recent iTunes interview Flea is quoted as saying Wurm’s picture of a man with a pencil in his nose was a significant influence on the video (Flea himself appears in the video, at a certain point, with markers in his nostrils, pencils in his ears and paint pot caps over his eyes). The photos in “One Minute Sculptures” were impulsively made and are quite bizarre.

Most recently, Erwin Wurm has worked on a series of ‘fat car’ sculptures which are “puffy, obese, life-size sculptures that bulge like overfilled sacks”. The first of his Fat Cars was developed with Opel designers but they were unsuccessful in achieving the kind of shape that Wurm had in mind. In order to create the quality of fat, the artist uses polyurethane foam and styrofoam covered with lacquer.

Erwin Wurm’s works are apart of prestigious collections worldwide including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, The Walker Art Center, Museum Ludwig, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Musee d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and the Centre Pompidou.

House Attack

Hypnosis
