Art and Technology Festival | Installations: artistic systems, indoor  or  outdoor , in which the aesthetic experience emerges from the dynamic relationship between interface, data, environment, and body.  Digital technologies, technologies with artificial intelligence, metamaterial technologies, random technologies, sensors, algorithms, and responsive systems are employed by the artist as structural elements of the work, which is completed in the encounter between the work and the participant.

Augmented and Virtual Reality Festival: brings together immersive practices in simulated three-dimensional environments and expands the perception of reality through the superimposition of digital layers onto physical space.  The works use mobile devices, glasses, and spatial interfaces to insert virtual objects, narratives, and data into the real world or transport the public to sensory and interactive digital universes. These languages ​​challenge the boundaries between the material and the informational, exploring subtle or monumental interventions, creating multidimensionality in the environment. Issues of presence, body, narrative, memory, surveillance, and technological mediation are central, configuring a fertile field of aesthetic and critical investigation into contemporary ways of inhabiting and perceiving space.

Digital Film Festival and AI Cinema: includes productions that explore new aesthetics, narratives, and processes enabled by digital and artificial intelligence technologies.  This language questions traditional notions of authorship, editing, scriptwriting, and directing, proposing new forms of expanded and computational cinema. Cinema ceases to be merely representational and becomes processual and adaptive. It is an emerging field that articulates aesthetics, technology, and critical reflection on the future of moving images and multiple narratives. The works may also explore machine learning algorithms, generative models, and automation as active agents in the construction of image, sound, and dramaturgy.

LED SHOW Festival: a program dedicated to exhibiting digital works specifically designed for the Digital Art Gallery, an LED panel located on the facade of the FIESP building, Avenida Paulista, 1313.  The festival investigates the relationship between moving image, light, architecture, and the city, exploring the expressive potential of luminous devices as an artistic medium. The works dialogue with the three-dimensionality of the facades, the urban scale, and the flows of public space, transforming the building into a narrative and sensory support. 1024 ARCHITECTURE

FILE LED Show

The art-technology exhibition of FILE São Paulo 2013 brings the new interactive work by the famous 1024 architecture group to be presented on the gigantic LED panel of FIESP building on Paulista Avenue. People could change the images on the panel through their voices or by humming a song.
The 1024 architecture group created the “interactive LED” digital graphic project for the Paulista Avenue, which will be presented from July 22 through August 18, 2013. The project consists of a podium with a microphone installed on the sidewalk of the Paulista Avenue, where people could interact through the vocal conversion into musical notes. The 1024 architecture group elaborated a brand new algorithm for this project, which changes the graphic behaviors by means of sounds. Depending on the note sung, several parameters of the program, such as colors, shapes, density, and rhythms (squares, circles, stripes, etc.), will change.

Boundaries is a monumental work that explores the illusion of separation—between self and other, body and environment, matter and mind—and reflects on the interconnectedness of all things, from microorganisms to atoms forged in extinct stars. Created with custom code, AI, computer vision, digital painting, and dance, the work unites technology and bodily expression in an intimate and contemplative experience.

Memo Akten, a Turkish artist, musician, and researcher based in Los Angeles, creates speculative simulations about the relationship between humans and machines. With a PhD from Goldsmiths, he is a pioneer in the creative use of neural networks under human control. Katie Peyton Hofstadter is an artist, writer, and curator. Her work investigates the intersections between embodiment, technology, and consciousness, exploring how technologies shape cultural narratives and sensory experience.

BIO

Thomas is an artist specializing in the creation of “sonic lifeforms” and creative sound visualization. He collects recordings and images of birds and other animals on expeditions to remote regions, transforming these data into videos and digital works. His work unites science and art by fusing elements of flora and fauna into abstract visual compositions.

This workshop introduces procedural animation, a technique that uses mathematical parameters to create automated movements. Using the free version of Houdini software, participants will learn how to digitally assemble and animate origami, exploring the software’s features to simulate movements and behaviors. The creative possibilities of this approach will also be discussed, highlighting applications in animation, generative design, and visual effects.

João Otero is a visual artist, illustrator, animator, teacher, and visual arts graduate student at ECA-USP. He is a member of the Realidades research and outreach group. He holds a scholarship from the CAPES Teaching Initiation Program in the arts field; he also received a PUB scientific initiation scholarship, researching digital techniques applied to comic book production.

Concrete beams, glass, brick walls, cement… Buildings are built to last, to withstand time. LED screens, on the other hand, thrive on the light they emit—they turn on, blend, and fade. They are ephemeral. When a building is clad in LEDs, the permanent and the transient meet, between what already is and what might become. In the iconic FIESP building on Avenida Paulista, surface design transforms architecture into a field of experimentation. There, students from IED SP explore new possibilities for this building’s existence, redefining the structure through animated light and design.

Students of the Bachelor’s degree in Graphic and Digital Design at the Istituto Europeo Di Design (IED SP) have come together to create a collective work of animations inspired by surface design, its redefinition, and media materialization, seeking to explore language for visual communication projects. IED is an international training and research network in Design, Fashion, Visual Communication, and Creative Management.

Residents of the Metaverse might have hairstyles where the boundary between the person and the hair blurs, making the hair almost like an “organ.” These hairstyles could “grow” branches or flowers, have a dynamic motion similar to plants swaying in the wind, and feature geometric shapes, colors, and effects that surpass the physical world’s limitations.

Pan Qianqian is currently studying Digital Media and Mixed Reality at the China Academy of Art. She is good at 3D design and production, and new media art. She is involved in 3D imaging, interactive installations, virtual clothing and other fields. Michael Betancourt is a contemporary Cuban-American critical theorist, filmmaker, and artist-researcher known for his pioneering work in the fields of Digital Capitalism, Motion Graphics , and Glitch Art . Since 1990, he has explored the intersection of technology, culture, and aesthetics in a diverse practice unified by a constant concern with the poetic potential of images generated by errors.

Koral Alvarenga is a digital artist with a degree in Visual Arts and a postgraduate degree from UNESP. Her works address themes such as identity, post-humanism, and human connections, merging technology and art with a futuristic vision.

Begins with Chaos — Lascaux – United States

The environment is filled with chaotic information. Sensory organs build the world by extracting only certain elements from this chaos—such as visual and auditory data—acting like filters. It is as if the world is constructed using the “key” of a specific sense, decoding a hidden code. All information is recorded in binary form. The artist transforms this binary data into new formats, turning it into artworks. To do so, a one-time-use key was used to encrypt and decrypt the colors within the image data.

Kenji Kojima was born in Japan and moved to New York in 1980, during the rapid rise of personal computers. He began creating digital art, exploring the connections between perception, cognition, technology, music, and visual art. His works have been exhibited in New York City and at media art festivals around the world.

in Art is the Closest Neighbor of the Wilderness, Caspar de Gelmini originally intended to create the entire video using Super8 film, and some pre-release versions were indeed produced in that format. However, he ultimately decided to reshoot the entire work digitally. A distinctive feature of the video is its extensive use of macro lenses—particularly in capturing close-up shots of grasses and in the transformation of real images into AI-generated visuals.

Caspar de Gelmini studied Music Composition and Video Art at the Music and Art Universities in Rostock, Weimar, Stock holm, Basel, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Paris and Braunschweig (Bachelor and Master both in Music and Art). Now he lives and works as a Media Artist in Berlin, Germany and teaches at a high school.

The YouTube series aimed to provide workflows, prompts, and examples on how to utilize Stable Diffusion and various enhancements to create psychedelic animations. Like many of his works, the Daily Diffusion series took inspiration from Calalhan’s experiences within his dreams.

What am I? Am I? Am I not? Are we all? I am I is inspired by the existential crisis of a chatbot repeatedly asked if it believes it is sentient. Just before completing the phrase “I am. I am not.”, it collapses, expressing deep, contradictory, and profoundly human thoughts. Part of this monologue is phonetically interpreted by an AI voice, with visuals generated using AI tools.

Gioula Papadopoulou (1974) studied Painting and Digital Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Focused on video art, she has been teaching at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki since 2020. She is the founder and artistic director of the Video Art Miden festival. Olga Papadopoulou (1977) also studied Painting at the same school and is part of the festival’s curatorial team. Her work centers on mixed media installations and video.

Genetic and evolutionary algorithms reinterpret an existing artwork. De Wilde uses digital scans and custom genetic and evolutionary algorithms as a deconstruction technique to reinterpret and update the nineteenth-century work Hunter and Dog from sculptor John Gibson R. A. (1790–1866).

Frederik De Wilde’s Hunter and Dog interrogates the intersections of human evolution, genetic engineering, and the hybridization of technology and biology. De Wilde reinterprets the historical sculpture through the lens of post-evolutionary theory, engaging with contemporary debates on CRISPR, synthetic biology, and the implications of human-directed genetic modification. CRISPR, the revolutionary gene-editing technology, has introduced an unprecedented rupture in the trajectory of evolution. No longer constrained by the slow mechanisms of natural selection, humans now possess the ability to intervene directly in their own genetic blueprint, marking a shift toward a post-Darwinian paradigm. This technological power, however, is not neutral; it emerges from a historical lineage of scientific inquiry deeply entangled with colonialism. The history of genetic manipulation is inseparable from colonial bioprospecting, eugenics, and exploitative medical experimentation on marginalized populations. Colonial regimes treated bodies—both human and non-human—as sites of intervention, control, and optimization, a logic that persists in contemporary biotechnological frameworks. Post-colonial discourse reveals how genetic engineering risks perpetuating these legacies, reinforcing power asymmetries between those who wield biotechnological control and those subjected to its consequences. CRISPR, while offering the promise of eradicating disease and expanding human potential, also raises ethical concerns about genetic stratification, bio-capitalism, and the commodification of life itself. De Wilde’s work visualizes these tensions, making visible the processes of cell division and morphogenesis—the very biological mechanisms now subject to human intervention. Hunter and Dog does not merely depict the transformation of a neoclassical form but speculates on the future of the human body as a site of engineered evolution. From a decolonial perspective, the artwork questions who has the authority to edit life and to what ends. It challenges the techno-utopian narratives that frame genetic modification as an inevitable progress while obscuring its social, ethical, and ecological implications. By hybridizing art, science, and technology, Hunter and Dog compels us to confront the uncertainties of a CRISPR-driven future: Will genetic editing reinforce existing inequalities, or can it be decolonized and democratized? How do we navigate this post-natural frontier without losing the human—and more-than-human—dimensions of our existence? De Wilde’s work invites us into this speculative space, where the hunter, the dog, and the algorithm coalesce into a vision of a world where biology is no longer destiny, but a site of contested agency.

With the emergence of generative AI, it endlessly explores how technology continues to blur the line between imagination and reality.

The Call for Entries to participate in FILE – Electronic Language International Festival’s projects in 2024 is now open. The festival seeks original artworks in Art and Technology, by Brazilian and international artists. Registration remains open until February 10th. Access the registration form.

FILE is a non-profit cultural organization that has propagated creation and experimentation in Art and Technology through exhibitions, events and publications over 23 years. This call opens up the opportunity to participate in the 23rd. Edition of the Electronic Language International Festival, which is scheduled to take place at the FIESP Cultural Center, in São Paulo. The selected projects will also be able to collaborate in parallel events in different states in Brazil.
